My family and I stumbled on this place while my wife and daughter were looking for thrift shops in the neighborhood. We were there for a late (3 p.m.?) lunch, which I think must be a good time, as the outside cafe tables were only 2/3 full. The hostess scolded me for having a plastic water bottle on the table (we had just climbed out of the subway on a warm summer day; plus, we were changing gears from low-end Brooklyn); maybe that was a bit tacky on her part as well as mine. At any rate, the food was innovative and superb. I had a salad of roasted eggplant, watermelon & goat cheese -- really, really good. Prices on the lunch menu were high, but not a whole lot higher than several of the more mediocre places where we ate during our visit to the city. Other than my little unpleasantness with the hostess, the staff were just right -- attentive and polite without being overbearing.

Best porterhouse in the city

I've had only good food at this place, and the prices are steep, but no steeper than I would expect given the type of restaurant it is. On the other hand, if you can find a porterhouse for two WITH potatoes and peppers and roasted garlic anywhere NEAR this good for anything NEAR this price anywhere else in NYC, please let me know. It's a feast, it's perfectly prepared, and we sometimes have it delivered directly to our front door. Other than Peter Luger, I haven't tasted a better steak anywhere in the city. For us, it's worth the price of admission right there.

a poor dinner choice - not special enough to merit the prices.

I have had brunch here many times, and occasionally dinner. last night the scales fell from my eyes, and I saw Morandi for what it was - a distinctly average fake Italian bistro, with very high prices. A piece of swordfish on your plate comes as just that - a modest sized piece of swordfish. If you want a single vegetable for your $26 entree, then thats $8 extra. 4 gulf shrimp are $29, and that is what you get: 4 unadorned shrimp on a plate? - add tax, add tip, and thats a $38 plate of 4 shrimp. Well enough cooked, yes, but really... our bill for these 2 plates one vegetable and a small carafe of wine was $112, with tip, $135. no desert, no coffee, no appetizer. Thats too much, plain and simple. I don't begrudge Mr McNally his high prices in the best spots - Minetta Tavern or Balthazar, but this just isn't up to that level, even remotely.

I must say my fiancee and I had such a beautiful time today @ Morandi. I am definitely happy we were there for lunch, so it was not crowded inside at all. i honestly felt like we were in Italy enjoying a luxurious meal, everything was delicious!! i would definitely go back, the ambiance, the service, the food & wine, just superb!

Avoid at all costs - prices on the menu are not the ones you'll be charged

Morandi's winelist seems deliberately misleading. Go for cocktails and you'll find a a list with 2 columns, one clearly with glasses priced $7-14, and another column with prices from $16-32. When you receive the bill, surprise! The wine list only included glasses and "carafes" of BOTTLES of WINE. The price of the wine bottles will be $20 or more higher than that indicated on the menu. Nowhere is the price of a bottle indicated on the menu. The server won't ask if you want a carafe or a bottle. In fact, don't try to order one of the "bottiglie" from the menu- bottles in Italian - or you'll may even more. Apparently, "bottiglie" at Morandi means HALF bottles. Go if you want to wait an hour and a half for mediocre food

I live a few blocks away from Morandi and I went for the first time last night. When I got there, we were told we would be seated in 30-45 minutes. We ended up waiting an hour and a half. My pasta had too much pepper and my cheese appetizer was simply tasteless. On top of all of this, the hosts and hostess were very rude when I asked for the second time when we would be seated. They continued to lie about when we would be seated and clearly were making fun of our party behind our backs when we began to get angry with how long we were waiting. This place is loud and crowded. and the only good thing about our visit was our nice waiter and the bread guy.

We came just after seeing Jersey Boys matinee; sat outside on a corner, and had a ball with our funny, sassy, Italian waiter, sipping Chianti and sampling various salads, pastas, seafood and desserts for 2-3 hours without feeling hurried once. I had so much fun. Would absolutely go back again! I had a wonderful pasta with a mixed greens and pears salad; my husband had a seafood assortment, and our friends had a bring you to your knees lasagne. Thank you Morandi for a fabulous memorable night!
