Was charged $49 for a tiny lobster salad. Terrible service. Asked for bread 3 times. Water arrived when was almost done with my meal. Pretentious and Overpriced. With so many wonderful choices to the left and right of this place, why would anyone go back?
A major disappointment

I had dinner at Nello's expecting an excellent dinning experience. Was I disappointed! This place was outrageously expensive, stuffy and the staff arrogant. My associate had a small piece of fish which was $65 which came with 2 asparagus. The garden salad was $17. Their wines were marked up 4x to 5x as opposed to most restaurants at 2x times cost. The food was acceptable (not great), the service slow and everything so overpriced you felt taken advantage of. Would I go back... NEVER!! Avoid this "rip off" joint at all cost.

The days of Nello are numbered. Overpriced and treating the customer rudely don't work any more. We ordered 2 pasta dishes and dover sole ($75) none of which were special or good at all. The fish was terrible and almost looked like a cook made it rather than a chef. The food is so bad we assume it is bad on purpose to support the "we don't need to care" attitude. The waiter was rude and very inattentive. I asked for a scotch and was served a $35 glass of Dewers. This is insulting and believe during these tough economic times Nello's days are numbered. Nello is probably one of the worst restaurants in the city and nothing special at all. Do yourself a favor and avoid the insult.
A nightmare from start to finish.

Nello is quite possibly the worst restaurant on the upper east side. The service is comparable to a sub-par Denny's, the food is disgusting (a $30 Ceasar salad consisted of a single romaine leaf and a small shaving of poor-quality parmesean, the $40 beef carpaccio was skimpy and sickening, our entrees completely inedible). A $35 vodka cranberry was perhaps the worst I've ever had, and our $20 bottle of Voss was lukewarm. An attractive floral arrangement (the only compliment I can give) barely masked the stench of rotting excrement emitted from the bathrooms - downstairs, but noticeable on the main floor by a completely open entrance. One suspects that the multitude of mega-stars whose photos are shamelessly displayed, high-school locker style, next to the bar were lured in not by the quality of the cuisine, but by the proximity to Hermes. It does give me great pleasure knowing that Paris Hilton had to endure this torture. The final bill for this culinary concentration camp? $250 plus tip for 2 people. Strictly for the masochists.

Dirty bathroom, and flies flying around. That means there are maggots in the kitchen... Waitstaff is taught to bring you things you did not order and push the 250 dollar pasta "specials" without giving a price.

Walked by Nello yesterday and the fellow by the door saw me look in and opened the door saying to come right in. We were looking to have a glass of wine and I didn't see any seats set up at the bar. He assures me that this is not a problem and to take seats at a table. Two glasses of pinot noir later, the bill was brought totaling $76. Outstanding display of a rip off if there ever was one.

Worst food I've ever eaten in my life! Don't waste your time and money. My friend ordered Beef Capaccio with Truffle. Horrible. The truffle had no flavor and the beef horrible. She sent it back and ordered pasta which was even worse. The taste of burnt garlic gave the dish a very bitter taste. It was inedible. No apology was made. $60 for 2 glasses of rose, $15 for water. My minestrone was very average. The bill came to $100 and we weren't charged for the beef or the pasta. I really don't understand how they get away with this and why people would eat this kind of food. I don't mind paying insane prices as long as the food and the service is insanely good. I have never written a review for a restaurant in my life, however I just had to say something about this. I'm still in shock 2 hours later. The worst restaurant experience I've ever had.
Horrendous scam -- stay away!

We wandered into Nello after spending the afternoon at the Metropolitan. We intended to look at the menu but immediately upon entering we were descended upon by four people who virtually muscled us into the dining room, took our coats and kept exclaiming, "Santa Monica! We love Santa Monica!" (The first question being, where are you from.) As we sat the waiter asked if we'd like a glass of champagne, which sounded lovely so I said yes and my dining companions said they'd stick with water. The menus arrived, and instantly we realized we'd made a mistake. INCREDIBLY overpriced, there was nothing on the menu that was even slightly reasonable, so we decided not to stay. Upon asking for the check we were presented with a bill for sixty nine dollars -- 39 for the glass of champagne and 30 for the water! If this place is symbolic of the horrendous excesses of the 2% of the country that now has all the money, I hope it goes down in flames -- SOON.

Nello's looked nice enough when we arrived, but my spidey sense should have been tingling when the distracted host: a) tried to seat us by the door to the kitchen and b) was perfectly indifferent when I asked to be seated near the front of the restaurant. Nevertheless, I held my judgment--big mistake. When ordering our appetizers, we asked for some bread. The response? The restaurant was "out of bread". How can an Italian restaurant run out of bread?! This and other mysteries would haunt and baffle us throughout the evening. The rest of the service was slow and callous and we frequently heard the host yelling at the highly undertrained waitstaff (granted, this was somewhat comical). It is difficult to imagine a work of fiction with a more disastrous plot. But what was worse was that it seemed as though other tables in the restaurant shared our terrible fate. Saving the best for last, Nello's grand finale was the bill. I should have known better than to order a special (pasta dish with no price mentioned by the reliable waitstaff), but still, the punishment was not exactly commensurate with my crime. The price for this little (perfectly mediocre) 2-person fiesta? $407.85! I have had meals in 3 michelin star restaurants for less than the culinary catastrophe that is Nello's. If only I could assuage the pain of my financial wounds with the knowledge that I had experienced high dining bliss. But no, this was not to be. I have experienced finer cuisine out of a Kraft box.

First things first, I had a chance to go into the kitchen and let me tell you it is DIRTY. The counter and cutting boards were disgusting. Leaving cleanliness aside that Nello is nothing but a suck-up cheat. Overcharges for dishes that supposedly have truffles on them, you need a microscope to see those tiny peices. If you read about this "Nello" fake, he calls the paparazi as soon as half a somebody walks in through the narrow restaurant doors so the place can be dubbed as famous. He's so desperate to be known. The food? The food is okay. but just okay. I've had better at olive gardens for foodness sake. If you want to be treated with an ounce of kindness by the anyone in that restaurant then you better look like a somebody and dress up because otherwise they'll treat you like f*****g crap. Never going there again, just remembering that dirty kitchen, ewwwww.
