During our recent vacation to NYC My family of 13!!! including young ones ages 16 to 7 had a wonderful and fun dinner here. The service was friendly and excellant. All the dishes we ordered were delicious and served without a prolonged wait. We were not rushed at all. We made a reservation and did not have to wait to be seated. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The prices are very reasonable. Afterwards we went shopping in Chinatown. Wow what fun. We love New York!!!

Wish I'd read the previous review before I showed up with a little too much of the Blind Tiger's delicious beer before i ordered--but the wonderful Yeah Shanghai is gone, replaced by the thoroughly nasty Old Sichuan. Oh well. As Grace Slick sang, "Life is change--how it differs from the rocks."

The tasty dumplings at New Yeah are no more. If you enter without looking up at the sign you will find yourself looking at the same fountain but eating at "old sichuan" instead. Really lousy service, dirty dishes, and mediocre food. The waiter tried to cheat the German speakers at the table behind us and to scam my credit card. My fault for not walking out when I saw the new menu, don't make the same mistake.

I have been going to this place once in a while for a few years but have decided it is not worth a trip anymore.. the food is OK if you never tried Shanghai food but hasn't improved over years.. looks like they have been just managing without spending efforts improving the menu... definitely not a competition against some other places serving the same Shanghai style cuisine in China town... the service was OK a few years ago, but is getting more and more unbearable.. I once even saw a sharp tongued waitress demanded a certain amount of tip from a guest.. amazingly rude..the owner, while having smile all over his face, was clearly on the waitress' side... wonder why... maybe he just can't find or keep good waitresses...

I have been to this restaurant 7 times now. I cannot go to NYC without taking the trip to this place. My favorite is the STEAMED JUICY PORK BUN from the dim sum menu! OUTSTANDING! I also have had Peking Duck there several time and that, too, is exceptional! Okay, so the tables are small and the place is somewhat crowded; you're not moving in there. The service can be somewhat sluggish but that's because they're always packed. I find the service to be polite and pleasant and they do not mind at all if you want to alter something that is on the menu. I highly recommend this place to everyone!

Maybe the service would have been different had we not gotten the "private room". We had to ask twice for everything. From forks, to water, to getting something packaged up. Someone finally came in close to when we were ready to leave. We asked for them to package up a dish we did not eat, (don't get the eel-very slimy, gross) he said sure, but proceeded to take only a bamboo steamer with him and never returned. At which point, we decided to pay exactly the bill and no tip. As we left, a waiter confronted my husband about the lack of tip as I walked ahead with our two small children. My husband was more than happy to discuss the lack of service with him.

My grandmother is from Shanghai and the food served here reminds me of her cooking. I find their soup-dumplings to be much better than Shanghai Joe's. The interior reminds me a bit of an Italian restaurant, but it doesn't detract from the enjoyable cuisine.
