My friends took me out here for a birthday. The place is small, so you kind of feel cramped. And boy, do they turn up the heat on this place! The food was good overall. The portions are smaller, a la French Cuisine. Very fancy, with a coat check.

I always have a great time at nice matin.. best french fries in nyc. I can always count on the VERY knowledgeable waitstaff to guide me, and they're so good at what they do, sometimes I say "just surprise me". I'm never disapointed, and living 5 blks away, not only am I fortunate to frequent, but it is also my choice, especially when I have out-of-town guest.

I live right next to Nice Matin, and have been there a handful of times. At first I really liked it and thought the food was amazing. However, the last two times I went it was just average. The hostesses are terrible during brunch. The last time we went, several groups of 2 were seated before my husband and I, who had arrived much later. They kept assuring us we were the very next on the list, but only offered to seat us when we told them we were leaving. I will not go back to wait forever for overpriced food.

From the disorganized wait staff to the overpriced, mediocre food, we were disappointed with every aspect of our meal at Nice Matin. For the prices, the food should be at least good, if not exceptional. The "Five Napkin Burger" was tasteless; the "Jardin Salad" -- their $9.75 house salad -- was bland. Of course, it serves me right for ordering a nearly $10 house salad. When we left without ordering dessert, our server said we were missing out. I feel confident we made the right decision.

Rude service, disgusting food

First of all, when I ordered a glass of white bordeaux, the waiter questioned the existance of such a thing. Well, there is and a french-speaking waiter at a french restaurant should know that.
Secondly, the recommended appetizer of potato-smoked halibut gratin turned out to be disgusting. Gelatinous white cubed potatos, green peppers and three small pieces of smoked white fish sitting in a rancid cheese sauce. After one bite, we tried to return it, but the waiter just said "ok" and left. He eventually took it off the bill grudgingly.

My vacation spot in the city when I want to relax and eat well and get treated like royalty. From the moment you sit, you get transported to the south of France. I loved the hors d'ourves and the amuse of crispy chickpea fritters (maybe too many?). My appetizer of sauteed shrimp blew me away and the entree with the sweetbreads was worth ordering again and taking home so I could nibble on it later. The wine pairings were great b/c of our sommolier named Ari or Avi...I can't remember. Great experience...total date place!

The food and drinks weren't bad, but service was abominable. When the waiter brought the check he wrote that 15%-20% was customary for tipping. My companion and I have eaten at plenty of restaurants, so we were appalled and offended that the waiter would tell us how to tip. We called manager over to find out if that was normal practice, he said waiter assumed because my companion was European......... Needless to say I will not frequent this restaurant ever again and will not recommend it especially if you have a European accent. Last time I heard, France was a part of Europe.

the food, service, decor, ambience, and wine list are all well above average, but this restaurant gets an overall ratings boost by virtue of being the only place on the West Side above 59th street that I go back to regularly. The fava bean tortelloni is mind-blowing (get an entree-sized portion as your appetizer - it's only 6 oversized dumplings), and the fish is consistently perfect. Sunday brunch is also terrific - the crab salad is perfect when you're not in the mood for traditional breakfast foods.

A Nice Matin Brassiere on the Upper Westside

Nice Matin would be rated a top notched brassiere anywhere in France. It has the feel, look and energy of the successful places we all have eaten at in Paris or any major French city. The menu is short, to the point and focused on dishes that offer excellent flavors from great ingredients at reasonable prices. If there is anything to pick on it is the decor that while Parisian brasserie perfect, adds little to the overall dinning experience. Service can be acceptable to very good – however not consistent. Overall a pleasant dinning experience.

Nice Matin is an incredibly acommodating restaurant; at least it was on a Wednesday evening after a jazz concert at Lincoln Center. My friends and I were treated graciously by a waiter I can best describe as one of the most competent and knowledgeable persons I have encountered in a dining establishment. Impressive wine list; although I could have done without having to see a $14,000, yes that's THOUSAND, 1865 Mouton from JFK's cellar on the list. Our waiter's recommendations were right on. Deliciously spicy merguez with a mustard aioli, sweet onions on a flaky pissaladiere started off the meal. My "speck", a less salty cousin of serrano ham, salad was light and tasty. My friend's ubiquitous, huge steak frite was tasty, if a tad over cooked. His wife's gnocchi, dense and filling with a lobster sauce that did not overwhelm, but then again didn't taste too much of lobster. The trifle for dessert was a very nice closure of chocolate, mocha and vanilla. The bill I found fair for the quality and service which we were given. All in all a great discovery and definitely a candidate for a repeat visit.
