Wonderful, authentic Japanese cuisine

Omen is a real gem. This is the place to go if you appreciate authentic Japanese, Kyoto-style, cuisine. I recommend the Dinner of the Season. It is expensive but worth it. I have seen famous chefs eat there as they know good Japanese food. This is not the place to go for the typical trendy creative rolls that you can get everywhere else. Omen is a special experience, right down to the calligraphy on the walls and the classic jazz they play in the background. Some of the other reviewers may have misunderstood what Omen is all about.

Pay through the nose for authenticity

I went to Omen with two friends for some casual sushi before a night out. The three of us ordered what we thought would be more than enough food. We even asked "Will this be enough?" and the server said absolutely. One small box of raw fish, a small bowl of sticky rice, a bowl of edimame, two glasses of cheap wine and EIGHTY dollars later, we were still starving, but in no mood to pay another 80 dollars to avoid leaving hungry. Sure the food tasted good and the decor was better than a typical sushi bar, but nothing could eclipse the fact that the menu at Omen is by far the most confusing thing you'll ever try to read in a restaurant, short of tea leaves or graffiti on the mensroom walls at Chumley's. To be honest, I enjoyed the slice of pizza I had on the way to our destination considerably more. If Omen wants to clean up their menu and accurately communicate the price of their food, then they might be on to something.

I wandered by this restaurant and made a mental note to try it out sometime. Looking around the room it looked wonderful, and smelled very 'authentic'. I should have been tipped off from the moment I saw the menu. Something just seemed... off. However, we finally ordered a number of dishes and managed to settle into a comfortable conversation. The food came, and went, mediocre at best. Actually, you know what, let me be brutal for a moment. Aside from one of the appetizers, the food was bland, and unoriginal. I was thuroughly displeased. Though the original waitress was sweet and knowledgable, I must say that the rest were sour, surly, and at the end, flat-out rude. I don't remember leaving a tip, and we ended up at a reliably great spot a few blocks away. Omen was a disappointment, to say the least. It wasn't worth it whatsoever.

Reminds me of Japan

Although children and sloppy adults were both treated politely by the staff, this restaurant is best enjoyed by adults looking for an experience akin to restaurants in still-traditional corners of Japanese cities. Get the chef's choice dinner so you savor a procession of taste experiences. The food is somewhat more hearty/rustic and less elaboraely constructed than kaiseki cuisine, but our party found it special, enjoyable, and filling. It is not food to rush through.

Omen is a jewel in NY. If you are looking for a real Kyoto-style Japanese culinary experience this is the place to go. Order ala carte and just explore or you can order from the set dinners. This is not a place to come to eat sushi. The traditional food and the atmosphere are sublime. Reservations are a must on weekends and kids are welcome early. Only con is that the prices are high especially the premium sakes
