this place always has a wait, but for good reason, the food rocks and the place is alive. one of my top ten places to go.

Although our table was booked for 8pm, we had to wait at the bar which was ok as we expected to be seated within 20mins and the restaurant was very busy. However, after 35mins had past, I asked the 2 staff who were seating guests, how much longer we would have to wait. I was told 5 mins, but we were not seated til over an hour had past and we had politely asked 3 times when we would be seated. A pity as the food, waiters and bar staff were all very good.

drinks: bloody mary, espresso martini food: steak frites, moules frite, anything frites! Pastis has always been the standard for bistro fare and is an anchor in the meat-packing district. It's recently fallen victim to the B&T crowd since all of the locals have fled the city in the summer but am waiting it out and hoping the regulars will return.

One of my favorite places to lunch.Excellent French Food.Make a reservation, if you can,for there is the long wait.As my friend Howie says "Get a gang and ask for the big table in the middle".Steak Frites and Moules recommended.Noisy. Pastis is one of the flagship restaurants of the newly reconceived "Meatpacking District", packing them in nighly for the feel of a large Paris bistro, the incredible fries, the buzz. The bar is always crowded and the large, communal table generally filled. It's not always easy to book a table, because Pastis is the slightly lower-priced, younger sibling of Balthazar, so has the panache, similar type food and promises a fun evening. For us the only downside is the noise level. Their steak tartare is nicely done, the steak-frites also terrific. I'm a fan of the roast lobster with garlic and generally have a glass of sancerre with it. The wine isn't cheap, and feels more like ordinary French table wine - served in rustic glasses. We've had a nice Sunday brunch there also, enjoying the salad lardons (with chunks of bacon over frisee and a poached egg). It's a youth place and kids would be fine there for brunch or if they like this sort of restaurant.

You no longer need to fly to Paris for the best French Onion Soup. Pastis and it's sister restaurant Balthazar have perfected the concoction. And at $8 a serving, it's a bargain that even the unemployed can afford. It's so good that I go back regularly, despite the restaurant's spotty service and over-crowded noisiness.
