Simple fresh ingredients combined with cooking techniques proves less is more.

I had a wonderful dinner here. The service is BS free, professional and tentative. The food is fresh and flavorful. I had the tripe, the cuttle fish, and the gnocchi. All were cooked perfectly with explosive but balanced flavor. My wife had the beets salad which she loved and she had either a cornish hen or some kind of poultry like it i forget, (i had most of the 2 bottles of wine, please forgive my memory) but she loved it too. We had the Peach cobbler for dessert, it was very old world country like, really comforting. We had 2 bottles of Barbaresco, both combined under $90, Great value! I love the simple and fresh ingredients the chef uses in his cooking combined with his cooking techniques prove a masterful skill. i don't like the noise, its too loud but overall I highly recommend this restaurant. BTW i am a restauranteur highly critical of all restaurants including my own, but i really appreciate the effort applied with much success at Peasant. This is my most honest opinion.

Wonderful Birthday Dinner

My wife and I had walked by Peasant a few times and had recently had a friend who raved about her dinner, so we decided to use my birthday as a prefect opportunity to visit this restaurant. As soon as we came in, the wonderful smell of the oven hit my nose and felt this was going to be a warm and cozy way to spend a bitter January night. We were awed by the waiter's recitation of the menu, loved the airy bread with olive oil and ricotta, and settled in. We started with mozzarella wrapped with prosciutto and octopus from the oven. We then split the amazing gnocchi with rabbit as a middle course. I had venison and L had lamb for our main courses. Both were more rare than we would usually order, but I understand that is necessary with venison. The dinner was capped off with a tasty apple pie and hazelnut ice cream. All in all, a wonderful birthday meal. The staff could have been a bit warmer, the meat could have tad more cooked, but neither detail was enough to color our evening.

Hello Ossobuco

Peasant is one of my favorite restaurants, the staff is friendly, the open kitchen is great and the food is wonderful. Unfortunately i've stayed away because I was ill and couldn't eat rich foods for awhile. As soon I felt better I ran back to Peasant. The ossobuco is amazing it melts in your mouth and you have to finish off with the bread pudding and ask for extra scoops of gelato.

Nothing peasant about this place!

The candles save you from dining in near pitch black but the food makes up for the poor lighting as it doesn't get anymore sumptuous and satisfying than trattoria. So, eat like a king but you'll feel like a peasant after you've paid the bill.

I loved the athmosphere in the cellar. It is rustic and romantic. Wine was good and the Gnocchi delicious. Fresh, tasty, just yummie. We also had the porc and the lamb, both great. Service was ok, but nothing outstanding. This is the perfect place for a romantic date!

I went to Peasant with my boyfriend on friday night, and I had a great night. It's a beautiful setting, the food was good, the staff were very friendly and all of this at a good price. Only comment will be that when the room is full of people, it's quite a lot of noise. But that shouldn't keep anyone from going there, it definitely won't keep me. Definitely recommended!

Everyone has such a problem with peasant. It is a little annoying at first that the menu is in italian but... after experiencing the truly authentic italian cooking like the goat lasagna and having only italian wines, you get it. It's Italian! Anyway the food is very good, that's why we go there.

Great food, cafeteria mood

If you are a foodie, Peasant won't let you down. The ingredients are fresh from the local market, as the sides are very seasonal, and all delicious. The menu is creative and the preparation is expertly executed for meat, fowl and fish. But the environment is somewhat lacking. The mood of the dining room reminded me of a school cafeteria, as the tables ran straight down the center and the flourescent lighting cleverly disguised behind wall-mounted mirrors is not very flattering.

Rude Service-Dont go if you cant handle embarrassment

Food is pretty good and there is a nice atmosphere. The place can be a little noisey and you need to bring glasses and a light source for the menu. However the food is good enough to compensate for those minor details. The waiter was however very rude and abrupt on many occasions. He made a huge fuss about the tip he got and how unhappy he was with it. If it had been a small tip I would understand but it was more than adequate by all New York standards and extremely good given the arrogance he showed throughout the night. I would have returned if it wasnt for the manner in which he went out of his way to embarrass the entire table. I just couldnt risk returning and causing work colleagues or friends such embarrassment and harassment.

underwhelmed?

I wonder what's making me WANT to say that I had an amazing experience. While no foodie by a New Yorker's definition, I am somewhat travelled and truly love to eat. I started with the beet salad, which was good, but just that. Rabbit lasagne gets points for presentation but didn't taste any rabbit. I also had the flourless chocolate cake, which was rich, but unsatisfying. I tasted my friend's cuttlefish and quince tart. Cuttlefish, yum. Tart, eh. I feel like the best part was the sweet ricotta served with the bread. Am I getting this wrong? I did not, however, have the service problems that some have run into. I also called two hours ahead on a freezing Sunday afternoon when it was snowing, so maybe that's why. Lots of 6 PM reservations like mine, but still many empty tables. When I described my tastes and asked the waiter to suggest a wine(told you, fake foodie), it was exactly what I asked for. I would try Peasant again, but I feel like I need a reason. Give me one?
