The problem with reading reviews is that you are never sure of the writers motives. Are these actual customers or shills from rival restaurants.? This was recommended to my daughter and myself by a local, after I enquired about a good place to get a burger. Woww Great Burgers Very nice decor a bit over priced $22.00 for an exceptional burger and fries huge portions could have easily been shared with food left over. My Coke was flat (even though it came from a bottle) and got a sour puss from the bartender when the waitress brought it to him. Other than that cheerful waitstaff.

I'd heard mixed things, but thought it was worth a try as the room looks really nice from the outside. Was also willing to give it a bit of slack for the same reason. Basically, room is very nice. Food was fine, not bad, not good. Service ranged from hostile to indifferent. Can't imagine going back unless it was for something very simple, something even they couldn't mess up. Too bad - that room is awfully nice.

I went with a friend and we were pretty excited to try it. The atmosphere was relatively pleasant and the decor was nice, but not nice enough to mask the awful events to come. The host first sat us at a table directly in front of the emergency exit door. I'm not really a stickler for fire safety regulations, but come on. The lighting was awful and we had to pass around a candle in order to read the menu. My friend ordered a Perrier to drink. The waitress then took the liberty of bringing him a Canada Dry club soda without even telling him that they didn't have sparkling water. Against our best judgment at this point, we still proceeded to order. We started with the squid which was less squid and more fried batter. It was completely over-fried and you could hardly taste the squid. I ordered the vegetable pot pie for my entree which was described as, "roasted fall vegetables with buttermilk biscuit crust". What it should have read was, "salty, overcooked carrots and undercooked potatoes with a buttermilk biscuit thrown on top". My friend ordered the duck breast which was served to him on a side dish. It was one of the smallest portions I have ever seen and was missing the dried cherry sauce all together. We were interested in ordering desert but couldn't take yet another let down, so decided to go elsewhere. I enjoy going to nice restaurants and paying for quality food and service, but Peels was seriously overpriced for the mediocre food and service. DON'T GO!

I can't say I actually ate here, and I never, ever will, because of what was required just to make the reservation. It was for 10 people. I was informed given our party number that I would have to sign a contract and hand over my credit card number in advance. The contract stated that 1) we would be forced to eat off the "prix fix" menu for $50/person, with about half the normal menu available (when you can get a main dish for $16, this seemed absurd) 2) a 20% gratuity was automatic 3) a $20 BOOKING FEE would be added (I have never heard of such a thing) 4) if we canceled we would be charged $250 and (this one takes the cake) 5) if one member of our party did not show up it would be a $250 charge. After reading this contract I had to sit down and put my head between my knees to avoid passing out. Needless to say, we did not make the booking. The food and decor get 5's because I don't know either way and never intend to find out.

The squid appetizer with the cilantro sauce and hominy (although the water said it was chick pea) was superb. The buns were light, buttery, and mouthwatering. Corn dogs came 2 to a plate but were easily divvied up around the table and gobbled up quickly to everyone's delight. The menu promised a chopped salad with all sorts of goodies but presented as a $9 plate of salty, vinegary romaine. Unlike at most restaurants, here the burgers were of a normal portion appropriate for humans, with extra salty skin fries. The fried chicken appeared to be almost a half young chicken, described by a tablemate as tender and innocent. The porkloin covered an entire dinner plate, and the swordfish was reported as decent. The potato and asparagus soup was salty and uncreative. Fantastic service. We got a table in the corner upstairs, so unlike in the rest of the space, we could hear each other talk.

Since Freeman's is my all time favorite place in NY, decided to brave the unflattering reviews and take 2 out-of-town foodies to Peel's. The decor is fabulous, space and air unseen on this island. Very gracious hostess, and there the good news ended. Sat forever, waiting for someone--the staff has that uncanny ability to scan the room and NEVER meet your eye; legions of people ambling about, impossible to discern server from the hordes (this was around 2pm, practically empty upstairs). Server finally approaches listlessly--this person had no business dealing with the public, she should have been safely ensconced in a research library. She botched our order completely: wrong coffee drinks, side of gravy was deposited upon the fried chicken sandwich, on and on. My Portland friend's Stumptown French Press coffee was brought to the table missing the French Press, with no explanation-- same for our absent drinks. After 5 min., we asked about them, and she said the 'barista' was bringing them--another 5 min. landed us the wrong ones. The food was mediocre--everything, including the iced coffee was strangely sour, tomato soup was single-note, big disappointment. When we politely canceled the chicken, there was no apology, no professionalism--my friend spotted what must have been the manager, strolling around, chatting up our server, but oblivious to anything going on in his establishment. We left a tip, hoping it would go to the support staff--but left feeling totally ripped off.

I'm a self-proclaimed coffee snob and Peels is the only place I go now for espresso. They have a great variety of beans and their milk is always fresh. They simply throw the best shots in Manhattan. I also get the monkey bread from their display case and it is amazing. I honestly wish I could swim in the cream cheese frosting. Mmm. It seems others are unhappy with their sit-down service, but I love their take out. They should stick to coffee and pastries.

The waitstaff and service are TERRIBLE! I was there on a night when the restaurant was practically empty and it took the waitress about 20 minutes to even come to the table to bring menus. Staff are rude and inattentive. The food is average and overpriced. It's too bad because I like the space and the look. Definitely not worth what you'll spend there.

I don't know about dinner, but I've gone there twice for brunch and it was delicious. My literal first thought after biting into the eggs with greens was "stop that.." it was so good. The staff seem friendly and accommodating, the ambiance is comfortable yet classy. The food was hot and delicious, as was the coffee. All in all, really nothing to complain about and much to commend. Hopefully dinner will be just as good because I'm planning my friend's birthday there!

I haven't eaten at Peels, but I did try some of the beautiful, rustic-looking baked goods at their downstairs counter and I was not disappointed. A buckwheat muffin with lemon marmalade and rosemary was an intriguing mix of flavors and a lovely hearty consistency. The graham crackers were buttery, crisp and darkly delicious. The brown butter rice crispy treat was an elegant take on this classic. And the girl who made my tea was just as sweet.
