Fish was too salty, no bread was served to us (while everyone else had theirs right after they were seated), mediocre dessert, not worth the price.

An absolute gem that ranks in my top 5. A knowledgeable and personable staff, and food cooked to perfection. A great place for a group and a special night out, as it is just the right volume, has good lighting, is spacious, and the appetizers are good for sharing. It's dressy, with modern, sleek decor and higher ceilings, and it's (thankfully) not too crazy, dark, loud or crowded. They master a classy, subdued and pleasant feel throughout the restaurant, while maintaining an all important intimateness in a larger (than I'm used to) space... Get the creamy corn and tomato+basil+cheese dishes if they're on the menu. Oh and the big steak (for two). The fish are amazing too. You will be pleased.

The duck meatball appetizer was very good. The duck entree was also pretty good. The apple bread pudding was decent. A couple things that separate this restaurant from some of the better ones: (1) Putting tablecloths on the tables would make the environment a little classier. (2) The service was slow in between the appetizer and entree. Great restaurants time everything perfectly. Kudos to Chef Harold, I think this place will be great in a few years.

Perilla opened up across the street from me a little over a year ago. I've been several times and each time have been delighted by the food (except for one single brunch which was just OK). The bad news: the decor makes it a bit noisy, the portions are small, and the bill is always 10-20% higher than it should be for what you're getting. It's not quite a neighborhood place (at least for me b/c of the cost...maybe I need a raise), but it's also doesn't quite warrant being a special night out place (decor plays into this in large part). To be clear, I've been several times and will go several more and enjoy each visit. One suggestion on a budget. Eat at the bar, skip the apps, have an entree and a glass of wine and you'll never be disappointed.

I was nothing short of thrilled with the entire experience at Perilla. The food was outstanding. We had the duck meatballs and the scallops as our appetizers and they were wonderfully prepared and left us arguing over who was going to get the last bite! For our entrees we had the hanger steak and the sea bass special and both were also very well prepared. Our waiter was very friendly, extremely attentive and had fantastic suggestions for wine pairings with our food. We found the atmosphere of the restaurant to be exciting and fun, the waiters seemed to enjoy their job and the manager was extremely vigilant and attentive. Our kudos go to chef Harold for a meal extremely well prepared from the first bite to the last.

If you sit in the front this time of year, you will freeze! We asked to move, which was not a problem. The chairs are uncomfortable. Cheap too! Hostess was nice. Service was not friendly or very good. We had to struggle to get anything. The lighting was distracting, and too bright. Food was not very good. Duck burger tasted like liver, and was dry as well. The avocado slice was so tiny, i never saw it, till the end, you needed a magnifing glass to see it!!! Bun cheap. Grilled Cheese, was boring and small. Salad was oily and salty. French frys were soggy, but tasty. Pickle soggy, and old. Sorry i will not be back...Could not sit there any longer in the chairs to experience dessert, which actually looked good.

Tucked discreetly into a side street off of West 4th Street, this charming neighborhoody restaurant had one of the most interesting brunch menus I've come across! I'm surprised that nymag hasn't uploaded one up on this listing. Perilla offers a balanced combination of traditional and inventive brunch dishes. I ordered the Creamy White Grits with rock shrimp, tasso ham, pepper, and--get this--a deep-fried egg! Basically, it's a soft-boiled egg rolled in buttered bread crumbs and fried to form a crunchy browned crust. When the egg is split in half, its golden-honey yolk gently permeates the dish. Heavenly! Luckily, I had a late brunch so this dish was satisfying and not too heavy--although, I have to admit, I skipped dinner! What a great little nook for brunch. I would definitely return to try the Celery Seed-Crusted Oysters and the Blueberry & Buckwheat Pancakes with sweet marscapone butter and vanilla bourbon maple syrup! I do wish that in addition to the Duck Burger they offer the regular classic traditional kind too.

Perilla was fantastic. The food--AMAZING, easily a 10. Very understated in terms of decor, so not very romantic & definitely not for kids. Just a cool, relaxing place to enjoy a fabulous meal & chill w/friends. Seriously--the best meal I've had in the first 3 mos of this year. We went to Megu on Saturday, & everyone agreed that Perilla was a MUCH better dining expreience w/o the hefty price tag. I cannot recommend it enough--I'm ready to advertise for this guy. The meatballs & sardines were heaven, the pork loin and cuttle fish were amazing, and that risotto...oh my god. The velvet cake was light--a big surprise, and i wanted to literally dive into the apple crumb & spend the night. AWESOME!!! Way to go Harold!

The three of us arrived early which turned out well as the excellent bar tender served us some great Martinis. She even explained us the characteristics of each Vodka used. At the table it was no problem at all to share the starters. All three - cuttlefish, cod cheeks and scallions - highly recommended. The main courses were a delight, as were the wine and deserts. And all this for less than $ 200. Amazing. The only minor setback was our waiter. She was correct but not as enthousiastic as the rest of the staff, or we about this restaurant!

We had a wonderful dinner at Perilla. The starter of wild bison tataki with baby arugula, gooseberries and white miso dressing was a perfect blend of taste and textures. Absolutely outstanding! We had mentioned offhand that we would share but were surprised when they gave us two separate preparations and only charged for one. Nice touch! Pork loin wrapped in prosciutto was perfectly cooked and delicious. My only disappointment was the roasted guinea hen with spaetzle, chestnuts and persimmons. It was OK but I did not think the 5 spice powder was a good match for the rest of the dish and the texture of the mixture beneath the bird was a bit dry and nondescript. Cranberry and apple crumble dessert was good and nicely served in an individual pot. Had a nice pinot noir also. If you removed the guinea hen dish, I would give it a 10. Clearly, Harold is a very talented chef!
