The whole GCT area has come up in recent years, but people who know about the downstairs food courts and upstairs bistros may still be unaware of Pershing Square, an outpost of the Grand Central superstructure, right across 42nd Street under the Park Avenue viaduct. This curious WW1-era structure has been used variously as a trolley barn for the 42nd Street streetcars, a tourist center for the 1939 World's Fair, and back-office storage and office space for the city. For much of the past 60 years it has been vacant. In the late 90s it became available for restaurant or retail usage, and after a few feints, Buzzy O'Keeffe finally got the place settled sometime around 1999. It's a perfect place for lunch. Burgers, spinach salad, and anything involving steak or frites are all superb; I can't speak for anything else. I have not made it for breakfast or brunch, but I notice a decided slide in quality reflected in the comments. Nevertheless this showplace is worth at least a drink at any time of day.

Boasting the best Irish Breakfast in NYC, Pershing Square certainly delivers. If an all-meat breakfast isn't your thing (move over Dr. Atkins) there are plenty of made-on-premises pastries and breads to choose from from the quaint pastry counter in the front. A great place for a power breakfast or power lunch, but also a good spot to catch a beer, dinner and watch the hustle-bustle before you hop on the Metro North and transport yourself to tranquility in the burbs.
