I've been to Peter Luger's a number of times over the past 10 years. They are overrated and I am now a regular at Outback....same steak...way better prices and the waitstaff is repectful. Ordered the Porthouse for two...fatty and grisly....creamed spinach barely fed two people and the hash browns were burned. I made a 5 o-clock reservation for two on a Wednesday night. They called my house twice to confirm the reservation...was this a booking for a cruise? And to boot, we get to the restaurant and the whole time, it was empty? Where was the surging crush they were expecting? Way over-priced and the wait staff is rude and obnoxious. Never again!

Went because of all the reviews and awards. However it was a disaster from the min i walked to the door. Doorman did not open door instead just stared at me. Waitstaff was rude and condescending. Interrupted our conversation several times just to make a remark about us not finishing our appetizer and entree. Hash browns were burnt to crisp and served on my dress and table instead of on my plate. Waiter did not even apologize! Steak (ribeye) was well cooked however bland & gritty. Even outback has better steak and SERVICE. Luger's needs to retrain their staff or check their attitude. If you want good service and food AVOID this place. It is riding on their reputation far too much. Huge let down.

Ok -- Peter Luger has been milking it for years. I was there a couple months ago -- in a word, dreadful. Cmon .. even outback gets you a better steak ... Better off at 100 other NYC steak places that are better .. just name one it likely to be better than Peter Luger's

Third time to Lugers . . . and my last. Luger's is living off of a reputation built in the days that it actually was great. The reputation continues based on reviews written by tourists who have read about Luger's in their travel book and come with pre-formed opinions about how fantastic it will be. They are enthralled by bacon that is good, but not great, by steak that is tender, but has no flavor, and by waitservice that by all accounts is very good, but that they, at any indication, write off as entertainingly rude. Luger's will remain popular, and should for all the people who just want the experience of claiming they've been there. But for people who want great steak, Lugers is no longer the place.

Terribly disappointed. You get the coice of the steak for 2, 3, and 4. I like my steak MR and my wife likes it MW. We went with medium and she had to pick at the sides. The steak was charred and really just not that good. I will say that the spinach was really good and the pecan pie was great too. The waiter was a jerk, only when we saw him. Bring cash-no credit cards. The best thing is the steak sauce, order it on-line, do yourself a favor.

My girlfriend and I recently had a terrible visit to Peter Luger. The whole experience, from the food to the service to the decor, was a real disappointment - especially after reading such positive reviews below. We really felt like we had accidentally turned up to the wrong restaurant. I would be willing to overlook below-average surroundings, and forgive the odd surly waiter, if the food was exceptional. Unfortunately it wasn't - in fact it was far from it. I can honestly say that the steak we ate was amongst he worse we've ever tried... Fatty, over-charred and disappointingly tough. Don't make the same mistake we did - go to Brooklyn, but stick to the great bars and lesser known restaurants.

I made the trip over on a personal recommendation with some friends who were visiting and it was a complete disaster from start to finish! We were 10 minutes early for our table and were made to wait for nearly 40 more before being seated. The waiters showed only passing interest in our table even though we dropped a small fortune, which has to be in cash by the way - don't miss that point if you go as they still seem to have missed the whole technological advance thing. This may explain the old slow rude wait staff and distinctly unhelpful manager. Would only go back if it was free - possibly if someone else was paying, and I happened to be walking past, and was hungry! So many other really great steak houses - don't be fooled by the reputation!

From the look of the place, we feared the service would be surly, but our waiter was professional and helpful (we were concerned, as we were famished, that a steak for two would not be sufficient - he set us straight about that). Hearty buns and butter were brought immediately to our table. We enjoyed the Caesar salad. But then, since we were seeing plates of "Canadian bacon" pass us repeatedly, we ordered two slices. OMG. OMFG. The BACON! Okay, I'm from Canada, and I have never had bacon that tasted that good here...ever, and I've had a lot of it in my lifetime. Gorgeous steak arrived on a large serving platter propped up at an angle so the jus runs to one end for easy access. The bill was reasonable, especially since I had already spent more money on several inferior meals. Some advice: 1) Make reservations, even if they say you don't need reservations for lunch. Might not need them, but it doesn't hurt. Two couples vaulted in front of us because of this. 2) Remember to bring cash. 3) Order the bacon!
