The steak was average.. The spinach was unseasoned and just slop on my plate.. The potatoes were burned (I like burned potatoes) but zero seasoning.. The service was efficient, but gave me the sense that he was doing us a favor to wait on us.. I am a big steak eater.. I've eaten some REALLY great steak in my life and I can say that this is not a great steak by ANY means!! It's on the same level as outback, but you'll get better service at Outback.. We left feeling like we got suckered

I have eaten there a few times already. The first time was a disappointment. I thought that the food was just alright and that the staff was ranging from plain rude as far as the maitre d' was concerned to barely cordial for the waiters. Having heard for years that the place was the best of the best, the mecca of steakhouses, I thought that maybe it was an off day. So I went back. Twice. To make sure. I still found the meat to be OK but definitely not out of this world, and the service pretty consistently deplorable, even by steakhouse standards. I don't think I'll go a fourth time. This place is living on it's reputation and no one seems the question it. There are definitely better steakhouses in the city.

I have been to Peter Luger several times and always receive the same excellent meal. The service is a bit brusk, but that's part of the charm. These guys know steak--and know what you want better than you do. Listen to your server, and you'll be amazed. Highly recommed the bacon and tomato/onion for some veggies. It's old school, so if you can handle that, it's worth the trek.

Well, after numerous attempts to to get a reservation at Lugars I finally had one. 7:45 Friday. After everything I've read (Best Steak in NY for 1000 years, etc), I was excited. They called twice to confirm. But why was I hesitant? Was it the way the girl who took my reservation treated me on the phone?? My instincts said that I might not be happy. I should have listened to my instincts. We arrived 10 minutes early. Checked in the with maitrede'. He acted like I was a tremendous bother to him. A theme we would see repeated over and over. Short summary; the steak for two was good but not something I couldn't get at a hundred places in the City, and for a lot less money. Baked potatoe dry. Broccoli bland. But, BUT.......the worst part is the service. Snotty, arrogant jerks. Our waiter barely paid any attention to us at all. We had to flag him down for everything; butter, empty water glass, you name it. And, when we did finally get him to the table, he behaved like we were a complete nuisance. He would make eye contact with my wife if his life depended on it, which drives her completrely nuts. Overall - I should have skipped it and I'll never return. Peter Lugers is an overhyped, tourists trap that is full of themselves. I don;t care how many awards they have won for best steak - our meal was unremarkable and the staff made it very unpleasent. Skip Luges. A waste of time and money

It's a New York City institution like Juniors, Elaine's, Algonquin hotel etc. I am glad to have gone. The steak wasn't bad. The hash browns were lovely and not burnt at all. Our waiter was a great guy. I really liked the whole experience and it's old school people. Old school in a wonderful way. It's not overly priced - You been to Per se? Megu? It's not in that league but it's well priced but not ridiculous like I find those places. I am glad to have gone. It's not the best steak I've had (although I am not these days hugely into steak) and I'm not sure where their beef comes from - Japan? Texas? Scotland? Argentina? Brazil - the point is all of these places claim "the best" but Peter Luger's is good and if you're intrigured it's worth a shot. Not sure I'd go back but you never know. It's definitely worth a one time go at least.

the much balleyhooed steak joint known as lugers was not a bad experience just obscenely expensive. no one held a gun to my head i went inside willingly to see what the fuss was all about. the steak was not bad, the baked potatoe was, well, baked . the service was ny rude which is to be expected. the joint ( this place is not worthy of being refered to as a restaurant ) was a corpse of a building whored out not unkike the old yankee stadium . nyc is a carnival of sorts not lacking in freak shows, and like the saying goes," there s a sucker born every minute " in an update - - - went to lugers last week whilst in town, and the waiter actually remembered me. food was good, not killer ( i've been in dallas all year where beef is king) the waiter practiced his vast show-off skills to my delight and was rewarded with a 50% tip. it was the best i've ever been treated in new york.

Great prime beef, good sides and ice cold German beer. What could be bad? The porterhouse was spectacular; succulent, juicy and tender. Hashbrowns, properly burned, were delicious. All the steakhouses I've eaten in pale in comparison to this place.

I've been to Peter Luger's a number of times over the past 10 years. They are overrated and I am now a regular at Outback....same steak...way better prices and the waitstaff is repectful. Ordered the Porthouse for two...fatty and grisly....creamed spinach barely fed two people and the hash browns were burned. I made a 5 o-clock reservation for two on a Wednesday night. They called my house twice to confirm the reservation...was this a booking for a cruise? And to boot, we get to the restaurant and the whole time, it was empty? Where was the surging crush they were expecting? Way over-priced and the wait staff is rude and obnoxious. Never again!

Went because of all the reviews and awards. However it was a disaster from the min i walked to the door. Doorman did not open door instead just stared at me. Waitstaff was rude and condescending. Interrupted our conversation several times just to make a remark about us not finishing our appetizer and entree. Hash browns were burnt to crisp and served on my dress and table instead of on my plate. Waiter did not even apologize! Steak (ribeye) was well cooked however bland & gritty. Even outback has better steak and SERVICE. Luger's needs to retrain their staff or check their attitude. If you want good service and food AVOID this place. It is riding on their reputation far too much. Huge let down.
