I can't imagine anyone finding fault with this restaurant. From the superb hospitality and service to the incredible decor, this is truly a find in a neighborhood crowded with too many wanna-bes. The food is amazing and the prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity given.

On a Saturday evening, we arrived a little bit after 9 with a group of six. The restaurant was pretty crowded. We were seated after ten minutes. After giving orders, we started to wait. Oh boy, we waited and waited... We complained a couple of times that we had been waiting for ridiculously long. The young waiter was a bit grumpy. But we were so hungry that we didn't leave hoping that we would be served soon. BTW, the table behind us were served before us! Finally, after one hour fifteen minutes, we got our food which was mediocre; we had much better ones though. If you're really hungry and need to eat soon, don't even try. I'm sure there must be much better options in the neighborhood.

Philoxenia is back. Love the room but must say the food was consistently better in the former, smaller location. The fish dishes are wonderfully prepared, though the portions are generally a bit small. The energy in the room is wonderful and inviting. The Skordalia and Taramasalata were very disappointing, the former rather tasteless and the latter way too salty. My Greek friends agree with me, while the decor is inviting and comfy, the food, service and value are still better at nearby S'Agapo.

We had a lovely early dinner here. Outstanding: grilled octopus, dolmadakia, whole fish. Tzatziki a little thick and creamy for my taste. Keftedia were delicious. Marouli salada was huge and very nicely done, but one should request dressing on the side. The flavors were quite good and the atmosphere was comfortable and reminded me of restaurants in the small non-seaside villages of Greece. Very pleasant wait staff. Worth the trek from Manhattan.

Amazing that anyone has the deep knowledge to recognize a rat's tooth out of context. I can understand the local axes grinding when a restaurant interprets the local Greek cuisine so superlatively in contrast to the mundane presentation of most of the existing establishments. The signature Octopus appetizer is perfection com pared with the all too often disappointing presentation of this staple by competitors. The whole fish teaches Elias Corner how it should be done: blackened from the grill on the outside, moist within. This is a keeper. Make the trek.

I have been wanting to go to Philoxenia since I read the New York Times review by Peter Meehan in 2004 when Philoxenia was in it's old location on 23rd Avenue in Astoria. The review described a "welcoming" restaurant that served "quality" Greek fare that has been "prepared with care." A brief relocation to the West Coast coupled with my admittedly Manhattan-centric dining habits meant that it took me over 4 years to finally make my way to Philoxenia. In the meantime the restaurant moved into an expanded location on 34th Avenue, still in Astoria. What I found there this past weekend was the dining experience I had been hoping for: friendly service, a clean environment, and most important of all, inexpensive, tasty, quality food, best eaten in a family style. We ate only from the not-so-small plate "meze" menu. The highlights from my meal include the sample of Greek spreads, the grilled octopus, and the greek meat sausage, served in a wonderful tomato sauce. And for dessert, do yourself the favor and have the almond cake, which comes soaked in honey and topped with tangy yogurt. It was a delicious end to a wonderful dinner.
