I don't get the hype about this place

When I saw the long lines, the crowds, and the blogosphere buzz, I thought this place must be awesome. Sadly, I was very mistaken. After waiting in line forever, I could barely hear my date, kept getting bumped by the crowds still waiting for a table, and felt the waitstaff's stress at the crowd. Chicken totally lacked seasoning or depth of flavor and the Mac n' cheese was weird. But perhaps the worst sins lie in the pies. That pie crust is LEADEN. And the fillings were weird. You'd think a place that has "pies" in their name would put more work into perfecting them.

Live down the block from here and was really excited to try it because of the name and the crowds of people outside. Had Chicken on a Biscuit, which cost $5 and tasted exactly the same had I used a frozen chicken patty, put it on a Pilsbury biscuit, and dumped Frank's Red Hot sauce all over it. I have and can again re-create this exact same thing at home with less disappointment. Decided to give it a second try when someone from my office ordered delivery. We requested that the Frank's Red Hot be left off of the chicken. The food arrived, with chicken that had been smeared/wiped of the hot sauce, now mushed and soggy with residual Frank's, with now broken/mushed/soggy bicuits stuck back on the accosted chicken patty. The mac & cheese was BLAND. Seriously... if I wanted to douse my food in Frank's Red Hot sauce to give it character, I am able to do that on my own time.

Terrible Service and pretty good food

I have to say I was underwhelmed by the experience at Pies N Thighs the other night. Having been hyped up, the reality did not live up the hype. Service was slow, waitresses/waiters had not a clue about the diners needs or even what they ordered (they came into the room and asked "who ordered XX?". I had the pulled pork box, with mac 'n cheese-- hearty, spicy and cheap it was a tasty dinner. They tried to make it up by not charging for beer and gave us a cookie... from speaking with others, most people have this same experience.

Choose the Chicken, Blow Off the Brisket

Typical Brooklyn cutesy place catering to the post-collegiate upper middle class white kid crowd who now populate the borough; ironic furnishings, decent rear courtyard etc.. Somewhat surly vs confused, slow moving waitstaff. Decide to skip the fried options so ordered a brisket sandwich. Big mistake. An absolutly worst cut fatty piece of gamy meat, best left as trimming in the kitchen. Sent it back to a waiter who tried to explain it away but I wasn't having it and opted for the fried chicken instead which was pretty damned good; fresh out the fryer, crisp, and satisfying served in a box with a decent biscuit. Not well seasoned but a lil salt, pepper and hot sauce didn't hurt. Wouldn't go out of my way to hit this place and does not rank near the top but ok for a snack if in S Williamsburg and not looking to fork over big bucks for a casual meal.

Great grits, unmemorable chicken; still need to try the pies...

The fried chicken was indeed juicy, but I'm still partial to Momofuku's. The grits, however, were a sleeper hit: velvety, flavorful, and the perfect foil to the other, more acidic vegetable sides.

The fried chicken box makes a visit to Pies-N-Thighs well worth the trip, but you will have to put up with some pretty horrendous service. On the positive side, PNT uses a great salty, peppery batter for their chicken that make the skin so good you'd want to eat that on it's own. The dark meat is moist and delicious, so dig into those drumsticks first while they're still piping hot! The white meat can be a bit dry, but that incredible batter makes up for most of it. The biscuit is fantastic, and the spicy collard greens make a great accompaniment. The pie at the end of the meal (we tried key lime and sour pear/cherry crumble) was very good, but not outstanding (and leagues behind the chicken). On the negative side, we waited forever and they did not really check in to see how we were doing. Once we were seated, it took a waiter quite a while to ask what we wanted. Once he did, he completely forgot to bring one of our drinks until we asked him again, and even then we had to wait another 10 minutes for it (a sweet tea; how hard is that to make and bring over?). He brought my friend who ordered the (only decent; not great at all) burger rare and with cheese a medium cheeseless burger. And the servers were generally unapologetic for delays/mistakes and pretty disinterested in us. Again, the chicken, biscuits and greens make up for all of this; but be warned.

The fried chicken is super juicy and just the right about of salt and crisp! The biscuits are light and a great balance of flaky and moist. Hush puppies are a bit course, but the collards are flavored nicely will pulled pork. Thank goodness I live so close by, I will be coming back again. Now they just have to work out their service kinks and accepting take out orders :)

i went to pies-n-thighs late (around 11pm) on saturday night with 3 friends. took about 15 minutes to get a table, chicken biscuit plus 4 shared sides, beer and tip came to $15. great, cheap and simple. i probably wouldn't seek it out if i wasn't in williamsburg, or wait more than half an hour for a table though.

Wait for a table not too bad, about 10 minutes. Good service, food came quickly. Chicken was hot and juicy. Fries were too too. Deep fried apple pie was not good. Would go back for the chicken again!

Don't miss the pulled pork

I'm pretty sure that neither Pies-N-Thighs nor Rock Star Bar has a sign, so it's really easy to miss either one. It's basically the only thing around there, so just look for signs of life, and you'll find it. Try a doughnut while you're there. Two bucks may seem steep, but it's one hell of a doughnut, and plenty for two people to split as a dessert. Be prepared to make a mess of yourself-- but one bite of the pulled pork, and you'll know it's worth the mess.
