You enter a deafening room up a narrow staircase where you run a gauntlet between a horde of confused tourists and shrieking natives. After a considerable wait (they will not seat till the party is complete) you are parked in the midst of jam packed chaos. Of course there is no room left for carts so servers come occasionally hawking cold food on trays. Most of the offerings are puddled in grease and the alleged seafood specialties are mostly stuffed with processed fish maw filler of a quality one might not even serve to a stray tabby. To quibble over price seems unfair since this one is only a few bucks more than the others but the miserable conditions one endures combined with the low quality of the food and the high expectations given the hype certainly don't justify the expenditure.

Ping's was only remembered for very poor service; the steamed rice ordered was forgotten, entree ordered by one of us appeared first, the shrimp dumplings were insipid and the overall mediocrity of the place was crowned with awful service. To top it all, as I was leaving a forgettable meal, one of the waiters/supervisors had the audacity to check my tip and come hollering after me to let me know it was too little! All I could do was to snap back and ask him what he expected the tip for? I could still hear him muttering nonsense in Mandarin as I walked out. Shameful, and customers should always know and protect their rights and not be intimidated by insolent, uncouth servers such as those at Ping's.

I was taken to this restaurant by another ABC. Her family has enjoyed their weekly dim-sum here since 2003. My first meal here was dim sum on a busy Sunday. The hakau (shrimp dumpling) was so fresh and juicy i order it every time i go back. Make sure you ask for the mango pudding for dessert! Dinner there make sure you ask for braised fish or any of their recommended fish is fine. Their Chef's special shark's fin soup will get you ready for your main course. Oh, if you like to order any item from their special menu, make sure you give them a call 3 days in advance for prep time (some abalone takes 18 hours to get marinated and cooked).

After waiting ravenously for 1.5 hours, there was no coordination of the food, no white rice offered or given, and to top it off the food was bad to mediocre. Of course, our hot tea was now no longer hot either. Overall, we were there 2 hours, and ate less than a quarter of the food we ordered because it was so bad. The shrimp dumplings were so bland that we would have left them uneaten had we not been so famished after waiting 1.5hours. You would think there would be no way to screw up fried rice and MaPo Tofu, but they did. The Ping's Special fried rice is salty and only salty, with no other flavors whatsoever. The MaPo Tofu was like a bland beef broth with chili pepper, completely lacking in dimension. The best thing we had was the sea cucumber which was benign at best. So go ahead and eat there if you insist, but plan to be patient and don't be hungry.

Many tourists and even New Yorkers mistakenly go to Ping's for dim sum. While the restaurant may be a top Chinatown seafood place, it definitely has a disappointing dim sum selection, is extremely overpriced for its poor quality & rushed service during dim sum peak hours.
