Went for my birthday. It's so much smaller than expected, but they do a great job making use of the space and the reservation cycles. It looks like it used to be an actual house but now it's a cute place with a rococo-y vibe. I had the monkfish liver special and it tasted like foie gras, but lighter. The striped bass and bronzino whole fish were great. Waitress described the bronzino as interactive because you had to cut through the skin and bones but the filling really made it. Even the crackers they give you at the beginning were good. Everything matched the feeling of the place - the flavors and decorations all worked together.

Went for brunch on a Saturday during a holiday weekend. The wait was about 45min so we stopped a tea shop down the street to wait. Totally worth it! The food was superb and mimosas were killer (fresh squeezed orange juice!). It's a little crowded and you need to be squeezed into your table, but the food certainly makes up for it. and despite the wait they don't rush you out if you're a slow eater, which is a comfort (though probably not for the people waiting)

I sat at the bar and was treated to a great brunch. Chef owner Gabrielle Hamilton presents with an eclectic menu of childhood favorites and new cusine. Try the coddled eggs with chicken, it was sublime, the garlic lamb sausage was off the charts and the thick country toast divine. Yes it is cramped and noisy, but it's full of energy too, talk to someone! This is a hipster crowd, mid twenties to mid forties, make a friend. Get there before 11:00 AM, but if you don't then it's definately worth the wait. Enjoy!

This place was such a disappointment. The food is not good and not enough. I went with three other people, normal size people, and we were all starving when we left the place. I ordered the chicken, which was supposed to be half a small chicken. This wasnt a small chicken it was half a thigh of a small chicken. The dinner menu is limited. The food doesn't have much flavor. The waitresses aren't the nicest and there are too many of them. The price is through the roof. The one good thing they have there is the ice tea, other than that save your money and go somewhere else.

My trip to Prune last weekend for brunch had its ups and downs. Due to its small size, we were not surprised to have to wait for a table. After waiting for about 30 or 45 minutes, we finally were seated. The space itself is very cute and cozy from the outside, but inside it definitely feels a bit cramped. Our server was not exactly the most attentive, but it was understandable based on how busy it was. The food, however, was Prune's redeeming factor. I had a hard time deciding from the unique and tasty sounding menu items. I ultimately picked the pancake, which was unlike any other pancake I'd ever had before. It was baked in the oven which made it thick and delicious. My friends had the eggs benedict and Monte Cristo which they also seemed to enjoy. So, even though the food was good, I think I would only go back for lunch or at a time that wasn't quite so busy.

2 weeks in advance reservations. Showed up AFTER they confirmed my reservation only to find out they totally screwed it up. They had me and my wife down for a 6:15pm reservation. Who on earth eats dinner at a restaurant like this at 6:15p? NO ONE. They seated us with SEVERE attitude - like we will seat you but were knocking someone else off the list. Hey sorry, but your restaurant had 8 tables empty at 7:45pm on a Saturday night. Get a clue, Gabrielle - times are tough - you should appreciate someone going out of their way to eat at your restaurant. Perhaps you should reconsider who you should have to represent your business when you walk in. There is like 2000 restaurants in NYC to choose from, who needs this kind of attitude from a place that isn't even new enough to warrant a honeymoon?

Our brunch at Prune was truly lovely; the spiced chickpeas and huevos rancheros totally hit the spot as did the awesome bloody marys mixed up by the super friendly bartender. The extensive bloody mary menu itself is a one-of-a-kind gem and the little decorative touches throughout the restaurant--the smoked mirrors, elaborately gilded gold doorknobs--were reminiscent of a favorite hipster aunt's house. Would definitely return-

My boyfriend surprised me with dinner here after we saw Bittman interview Chef Gabrielle Hamilton months ago on some PBS program. When my birthday came around he remembered, and it was far beyond what we even expected it would be. Chef Hamilton's food is deceivingly complex in light of such simple ingredients, which made for a refreshingly un-fussy dining experience that was exquisitely decadent and sophisticated at the same time. The bone marrow was an experience in itself, and the lamb shoulder melted away in juiciness. Prawns were wonderful, served the right way with heads on - and you better take advantage! Our server was very attentive and as enthusiastic as we were. Overall, one of the most impressive and thoroughly fulfilling dining experiences in New York City.

Can't understand the negative reviews found at this site for this restaurant gem. What's the problem with butter and pork fat? Granted, one must know what to order, but the sweetbreads and bone-marrow are, perhaps, the best in town. I often go for an 'entree' of either, and they make an exquisite evening with just the addition of wine to the order.
When in an adventurous mood, I've rarely been dissatisfied with other things ordered, except that I find their summer menu less satisfying.
Also, great bar with great caihparinas (sp?)

I went to Prune last friday night with my girlfriend. We didn't have reservations. Our coats were taken and we ordered two excellent whiskey sours from the most pleasant bartender I have encountered. We were quickly seated at a table and began ordering. Pork belly, salted onions with bread, yams, stewed chestnuts, mussels, everything has been carefully considered and produced in a way that maximizes delicious fat content. It was crowded, but everyone was good natured, and our waitress never rushed us, as we took our sweet time eating our way through 4 or 5 sticks of butter. Dessert was good, and our waitress treated us to a dessert wine on the house. Its rare that I eat at home, but rarer still that I'm impressed with a restaurant. Prune was a real treat.
