Should have known. 9:00 Thursday night. No one in the restaurant, but decided to try it out because other restaurants packed solid for fashion week. Restaurant unpleasantly cold and service extremely poor. Our served did not offer any specials and could not suggest any particular wines appropriate to accompany our meals. Bread served from this bountiful basket, but unclear as to how old the bread was. One of us ordered IcedTea - no Splend or Equal - went to Starbucks across the street to get them. Meals took an extremely long time. We knew ours was ready when we heard the kitchen ring this obnoxious bell. Speaking of kitchen, don't sit too close. There is so much noise and music coming from the kitchen that we had to ask bartender to lower the kitchen music twice. Meals were suspiciously similar to microwaved. The mozarrella clearly was frozen. Service sluggish. At one point, the one server in the restaurant was eating dinner so I had to get up, bring our wine glasses to the bar, and ask for more wine. In the end, quite oddly, there were ambitious to clean up. For what, I ask? Should have known!

The backyard patio "garden" was awful and cluttered, and definitely where you want to sit and enjoy a meal. Service matched, as apparently the waiter forgot about us. Inside may have been better, but cannot say anything about that.

The worn and torn menus and the worn out bathroom should tell you what the kitchen is all about. This place needs an overhaul.

Since we live across the street, my boyfriend & I decided to come here last night. Rachel's does have a quaint decor, I'll give them that. The waitress was polite. I had a hankering for the fish & chips, so I asked her if she would recommend that entree. She replied that it was quite good, and that she should know, because she was from the British West Indies. Sounded good to me. You can imagine how chagrined I was when my food was presented; the "chips" were shoestring potatoes, not at all similar to the nice, big fries you get at pubs in the U.K. The fish was almost inedibly bland and flavorless; it also stuck to the wax paper. ( I can understand that happening at a fish camp, but this is supposed to be a proper restaurant.) I did mention to the waitress that the fries weren't what I expected, and she offered to bring me extra ones! Uh, no thanks. When she saw that I'd hardly eaten anything, she offered me a free dessert, which was nice, but since I don't care for sweets especially, I passed.

On a recent trip to NY we did not have any dinners plans and decide to walk in the opposite direction from the main stream restaurant to find a small local eatery. We came across Rachel's and saw some items on the menu that we could enjoy, what we were not expecting was a fabulous meal and great atmosphere. At first look you would not expect anything special as the tables are small, cozy and the chairs rock, the bar takes up a large portion of the space. We sat right at the front and the windows to the street were open, the street noise just added to the atmosphere. I ordered the pistachio encrusted tuna rare as suggested and it was truly the best I have ever had. Light, moist and flavorful. To top off the evening we chatted with the older couple next to us. They were life long New Yorkers and always ate at Rachel's when they come to the city because of it good food. We agreed. Next time we are in NY we will definitely eat at Rachel's. Oh did I tell you we are life long Californians.
