Some enchanted evening
By michaelhhart on 8/23/2011
We ate here last night to celebrate my lady's new job, and I think it is perhaps the best overall meal I have had in the city. The cocktails were hit or miss. My vesper was great, her dark and stormy had little to no ginger beer and a lot of rum. A southsider had a mint leaf floating in it, but none muddled, though I suppose that detail would be up to the bartender's personal style. We went with the chef's tasting menu and the food was: classic with thoughtful touches (the caramelized sweet onion and strawberry crepe supporting the foie gras was a fantastic mixture of flavors), portioned just right for a 6 course meal, well prepared, well presented, and every morsel was absolutely delicious. The service was wonderful; attentive, but fading away when not needed. We never felt rushed, or hovered over, and we never felt wanting for anything. All members of the staff were congenial, friendly, and professional. The Decor absolutely highlights an amazing view as dusk fades to night, with perfect lighting at each table. The pianist plays for a while, then takes a break, so you have time to talk and enjoy the experience without constantly talking over the music. Did I mention the beautiful flower arrangements everywhere? Or the Valets cheerfully getting me a city cab instead of a car service when asked. Yes a jacket is required, and should not be a reason to write a bad review. Also, our maitre d' was nothing like the person above described. Thank you River Cafe for a wonderful meal!

My husband and I chose The River Cafe to celebrate our anniversary. This was our first time at The River Cafe. The view was breathtaking. Our service was outstanding and the food was delicious. After dinner we enjoyed a drink by the bar while listening to the piano player. The staff was very generous when they found out it was our anniversary...congratulating us with complimentary drinks and chocolates. Yes, our evening could not have been more perfect. We plan to return very soon.
Great view, decent food, poor service

I base my poor review on the service at the River Cafe. The scenery is spectacular, the food is often quite good, but these good things come at a price. My guest and I felt rushed by the wait staff from the start. By the time we had finished dessert, barely an hour from being seated, the maitre d', who talked and acted like a Good Fella, said "hey folks, come on now. I'm gonna haf ta ask ya ta leave. I got people stacked up at da bar." Shockingly rude, considering the $325 tab for two.
Classic New York...A Must if you Love this City

The food or the service might not meet the standards of some of the other readers here. I had an outstanding experience. I brought my girlfriend for her birthday and the staff could not have been more accomodating. The food was excellent as it was part of the price fixe menu. But above all, the view from the restaurant is NOT to be missed. The River Cafe is part of this city that MUST be experienced if you consider yourself a city connoseour.
Expensive But Worth It!

Food is fantastic...service was attentive...so what's $6.00 for a small glass of iced tea? Great place for a romantic date or special occassion.

The River Cafe is subtly beautiful, sophisticated, and classic. Men and ladies must be dressed and behave like grown-ups - jackets for gentlemen, and no sneakers, ripped jeans, or shoddy attire. At a special occasion, I'm always disappointed when some guy wearing a baseball hat sits at the next table, while his date gabs on her cellphone. The River Cafe is simply elegant - the amazing flower arrangements, iconic city view, and gracious staff. I've eaten here many times, and it meets and exceeds my experiences at some of the world's finest restaurants. My real treat is having lunch here after a court date or business meeting in Brooklyn.
an army of waiters
By vogelenzang on 9/23/2009
it started with a very critical glance of the girl at the entrance, She gazed at the way my wife was dressed, as if she hardly could pass the dresscode-exam. (She was clothed very decent). One waiter with cold eyes directed our bottle of wine, another our waterbottle: you could not take one sip, and there they were again to refill the glasses. Then there was a guy who took the empty plates, interrupting our conversation, and another taking away empty glasses, interrupting our conversation and even when the bottle was not empty. The older man in grey suit who took the order was the only one who was very nice. Food: my duck breast was okay, about the quality you get it in a local place in southern france, which is indeed good. Overall: a pretentious place for people with money.

I plan on going back again this summer to enjoy the views and food - my boyfriend and I found it to be very quiet and romatic - an ideal summer date spot.
