My boyfriend and I visited rm during restaurant week, as, on a grad student salary, it would otherwise be outside of our price range. The food was fantastic - the combinations were innovative but wonderfully complimentary, and I will never figure out how they cooked the egg on my frisee "au" salmon. The service was polite in general, but I got the sense that the staff "smelled poverty" on us - we were only offered the prix fixe restaurant week menu, and the waiter seemed shocked when I asked to see the regular wine list (not that I could afford anything on it...). There was a slight air of condescension as he took our orders and served us, the sort that I get a bit sensitive about when I make the trek from graduate school in new jersey. The food made up for it, though, easily.

The food is great - everything from appetizers to the dessert. The ambiance is average but the service was disoriented. There were many servers but did not know what to do. Not good for large parties- more than 4.

The service is amazing; everyone (from the coat check girl to the chef himself) is incredibly friendly and inviting. The food is simply the best seafood in New York. A++

I mean the fish. Eating out means delicious food and great ambiance. Translation - I am hungry and I don't want to fall asleep while I am eating. Where is the food and the atmosphere at RM? The presentation is beautiful but the portions are ridiculously petite - ie 2 scallops are considered an appetizer. And the ambiance is so sedate that I almost feel asleep.
And the company, well, I couldn't hear what my friends were saying because of the poor acoustics.

If you are looking for great seafood prepared in a way that excites your palate, in an environment that is not pretentious, then this is your destination. RM has a great wine list and very knowledgeable staff. Both lunch and dinner are great values. I highly reccomend this restaurant.

RM makes my top 10 restuarant list in NYC. I have been to many top restuarants in the City and RM surely is one of them. The food is over the top!

I have to say that i do think it takes true talent to make seafood interesting, creative, fun. Witness the dearth of truly good seafood restaurants in our city and you realize that there's a reason less intrepid restaurateurs stick to tuna tartare and crabcakes. Well, if you are sick of the usual, run, don't walk to RM. I have now been to dinner there three times, and can say that each meal I have had has been different from the last, and that each dish Moonen creates has been with alot of thought. The halibut is the best in the city, the lobster ravioli sublime. Our friends were oohing and aahing over the dessert selections and you honestly find yourself picking what you'll be ordering off the menu the next time you come there for dinner. Bravo to Rick and his staff for turning a lost & tired space into a setting that is gorgeously understated with the menu reigning front and center.

An incredible dining experience with excellent food and service to match. Started with sashimi style yellowtail appetizer with grapefruit, small but wonderful. Main course was salmon BLT, quite different from other salmon BLTs, since the salmon was cured, with wonderful spread on 12 grain bread. Size of main course made up for the small appetizer. Quite filling. Nice wine selections especially by the glass. Had a lovely chardonay. Waiters at our beck and call, with Rick Moonen awaiting our departure, to find out how we enjoyed the meal. The decor is beautiful. The boat decor is a carry over from Oceana, but is more dazzling at RM. Great business lunch spot.

Perhaps it was simply one bad night out of many extraordinary ones and we just happened to be unlucky. However, I really had a hard time understanding all the rave reviews about RM. The food, billed as the best seafood in NYC by some, was disappointing. It's not that it was simple but it was uninspired and the servings miniscule. The service was poor as we had to wait an eternity to get our menus, then the waiter practically showered our table and the one next to us by knocking over half a bottle of mineral water. Perhaps our expectations were just too high due to all the hype about this place. Overall, our dinner at RM was one overpriced and 'soggy' experience.
