I went on an empty Sunday night and sat at the bar. Food was great -- scotch egg appetizer was nicely done and not rock solid (as most seem to be in this town); short rib sandwich was tender and robustly beefy. Well worth the out of the way location in mid-side Billyburg.

We were visiting from Minneapolis and a friend told us about Rye. We cabbed it from the city and were graciously received. The hostess went out of her way to seat us at a cozy table and while waiting, the husband and I had drinks at the bar from a very attentive bartender. I can't remember what we had, but it was and great vodka, ginger cocktail. Our food was fantastic. The meatloaf sandwich was recommended and it was every bit as fabulous as described. This place was well worth the trip to Brooklyn. We'll be back!

We have been dining at Rye since it opened and have loved the food since day one. We have made a point to bring people and share the wonderful dining experience with our friends. I would say we've been there over 15 times and brought parties of 7 or more each visit. Unfortunately our dining experiences became more and more of a lottery game when it came to the service. We realized that our disastrous experience was solely due to one person, the manager. Our last visit was by far the worst we've ever encountered in a restaurant. We had made an 8:30 reservation for 7. Knowing we would be late we called to let them know we would be 15 min. late due to traffic to which we were told it wouldn't be a problem. We arrived 12 min after our reservation and were told our table was given away. After we spoke to the manager and told her how unprofessional she was, she just rolled her eyes and said nothing more. As much as I want to support local business I was just thrown aback from this person's lack of respect. This place is amazing but mismanaged by a manager who has so little understanding for the restaurant industry. It was embarrassing to praise the restaurant to our guests and end up being treated like dirt. We ended up having dinner in another local joint where we were received like kings like we should have. Rye, do yourself a favor : Fire that manager, toxic should be ridden of. When that happens we'll come back. Till then good luck to you.

It seems Rye likes to treat regular customers rather badly. We have brought many friends and family here since it opened and we always tip well, spend well, and are always very respectful. However we recently were part of a large party and we made a reservation. Owing to traffic we arrived 12 minutes late only to find that despite calling to tell them we were coming they rudely gave the table away. One member of staff in particular was sullen and we realized she was the reason they did not hold the table. In addition, on a previous dinner occasion this same sullen member of staff rudely asked our table why we had not tipped. We pointed out nicely that they had already included the tip on the bill as we were a party of over six people, and we actually had tipped extra. This person was so rude to the group that we did debate ever returning as her attitude almost destroyed a lovely evening. Unfortunately after this recent experience this is strike two. It is truly a shame how when new restaurants start to do well they forget the people who made a big effort to support them in the first place. The sad part is the food is wonderful, but the overall dining experience is a bit like being in a bad relationship, you know it is not worth it in the long run so you have to just walk away. Touche. Therein lies the lesson: if you treat people well they will always come back even if the food is less than perfect. The same cannot be said for the reverse.
