i have been to san domenicos at least 15 times during the past 15 months. the service is suoerb, one of the owners Marrissa May , lets you feel at home and as if you were in her own house dining. If you are lucky, the chef will come out to greet you on a sunday afternoon. The brunches are the best,I either go to the Ritz Carlton or San Domenicos. Marrissa and her crew take the cake..

The evening started out badly when the hostess ignored my party's request to seat people requesting a certain name at their table (I didn't know whose name the party was under). 20 minutes later I was finally allowed to walk through the restaurant and find them. Food was lackluster at best. For these prices I want to be wowed. I wasn't wowed. There was nothing special here. $23 for a single raviolo was utterly ridiculous (not to mention $19.50 for spaghetti with tomato sauce and $15 for a tossed salad). Special of the night, stuffed phesant, had no other flavor than vast amounts of salt. Steak was tough. There is nothing in this restaurant that justified the insane cost. Service was not unfriendly, but was slow and at times inaccurate. Ambience was horrid. Restaurant was ugly. I have seen many a cozy little neighborhood Italian place with better decor. The only "ambience" here was the fact that the beautiful people pay a lot of money to eat here away from the riff raff who wouldn't pay so much money to eat here. The riff raff may have a point!

It's restaurant week in New York. Normally, I could not consider San Domenico, but this week a three course dinner costs $30.04. A la Cart the price would have been about $75. We loved the service. We had expected it to be stuffy based on other user reviews. Johnison was especially friendly. Our own waiter was helpful in changing the dessert ingredient meet my wife's allergy issues. The food was excellent bargain at the restaurant week prix fix price. The room has a rich art deco decor. It was a pleasure being here. We will return for discount lunches and pre-theatre dining. The pricey a la cart menu can be avoided.

Matre'D very polite but waiters were hard to understand and not friendly. Menu was poor. Waiter said Ravioli was a small portion - but not "One" for $21.. It should be an appetizer!! Not an entree! At least it was good. Spagetti and Lobster tasted like iodine. Then when one of us asked for water the waiter said "sparkling" and poured 4 glasses.. charging $16 dollars - supposedly for 2 bottles. One was removed from our bill! Would never return or recommend to anyone! Other places in NY are much better. Its not the money but the quality.. and this was not top notch in the least!

This by-the-book top flight Italian is the midtown classic. Much more formal than it's cuisine equal I Trulli, it meets every expectation. If you are not looking to relax while dining in the garden, or just looking to impress, this is it in Italian.

After beeing there many times I can say that San Domenico is Haute Cuisine Italian. Very good. The service was flawless. It is not a friendly or warm place but it fits the decor.
