Stranded and thankful

We were lucky to be caught off guard, late and hungry, near Savoy. We had a great meal, a delightful staff to wait on us and a very pleasant atmosphere. It was lovely to discover that, sometimes, when you don't have a reservation, you can have such a pleasant surprise.

Good food ruined by smugness

Going to dinner at Savoy last night with my mother and sister, I was struck by the physical beauty of the space and the deliciousness of the appetizers. The entrees had their problems but were still quite good. However, all of this was overshadowed by the blatent coldness, rudeness and smugness of our very pretentious waiter. He seemed to actually show disdain for us, on varying levels, throughout the meal. Although, I have been a fan of Back Forty (Savoy's sister resturant) and enjoyed the food at Savoy, I can not see returning to a place where my family and I were treated this way. I usually do not notice service one way or the other as I am focusing on the meal itself and my company, but this was, unfortunately, impossible to ignore.

What happened to what used to be a charming destination restaurant? On my past two visits the food was at best fair. The menu continues to show creativity but the execution is lacking. I even found the quality of the ingredients to be poor. The stripped bass that they served me on Saturday was grey and inedible, not to mention overdone. Even more troubling, the staff has become complacent to the point of smugness. Our waitress could not control facial expressions that told us that our simple requests were an imposition. I would like to like this restaurant but I just can't any more.

A small, salty restaurant

I had lunch here, and the menu was rather small. The food, that is, not the wine list. The food on the menu was delicious, especially the leek and potato soup. Yum! The Yucca fries were surprising. The falafel was scrumptious, but I had a weird of feeling of deja vu while eating; it had an uncanny resemblance to some Chinese food I have had. The service was great, and the decor was beautiful and very tasteful. It was beautiful stone.

I took my wife there on her birthday and she had a wonderful time there. With its warm fireplace and a romantic glow, Savoy is definitely one of the best restaurants to take your lover. The food came out in small portions but the taste was heavenly. The price was within reason and the place was saturated with romance. The service was great. Only con about this place was its small dining area. The bottom line is: girls love it here!

My husband and I got stranded at Savoy one cold, rainy Saturday afternoon. We sat by the fire, shared a bottle of Champagne and had a wonderful lunch while we watched the world go by. I couldn't imagine a more delightful way to pass the time. Service was friendly but unobtrusive. The chicken soup with hominy warmed my soul. This is a delightful place.

For the price I expected more. The menu was not particularly original, nor was the service all that great. I will not go back here.

Although I haven't been back since they remodeled the downstairs into a cold, art-world-ish hangout, the meal I had here when it was all cozy and Adirondacky was one of the best of my life. You can still have that upstairs. This is one of the few places in Manhattan where you feel like every single worker in the restaurant wants you to have a wonderful meal-- really cares -- instead of just cynically indulging your pretensions. I had a delicious duck breast and other goodies, and my beau had a delicious halibut. Go, go, go!
