PLEASE DON'T Make ME GO AGAIN!

I went to Serendipity to celebrate my niece's 16th birthday. It was so NOT a good experience! The food was akin to a bad day at TGIFs. It was so cramped and the decor is less than enchanting. The way it was hyped I was thinking it would be much more whimsical. Sorry but a bunch of Tiffinay imposters hanging from the ceiling do not impress me. At least it keeps your eyes focused upwards so you don't notice how rundown the rest of the place is. My daughter, who couldn't go to her cousins birthday, is now begging me to take her to have the frozen hot chocolate. PLEASE SOMEONE - tell me where I else I can take her to get this treat so I DON't have to experience this unpleasant place AGAIN!!!

Terribly Overrated

Not sure it is worth the wait, having done it three times now. Desserts are good, but don't even bother ordering an entree - mediocre at best and overpriced. Staff is snooty and takes to ordering the guests around to keep the terribly cramped space orderly. The frozen hot chocolate (classic is the best) is good and fun to share, but certainly nothing to die for. The one bathroom, which also usually has a line, is just another reason to pass this place up.

Broadway blackout sundae all the way!

If you go during an off time (if you can find one) this place is not so bad. Ordinarily the service stinks/is super snotty, waiting three hours for ice cream isn't worth it and the place is run down. But at a quiet moment you can appreciate the heaps of ice cream and a more laid-back staff. All of a sudden the place looks quirky and lived-in, not falling apart. The Broadway blackout sundae (ice cream, hot fudge, chocolate cake with chocolate chips baked in) is so great it's almost worth the ordeal. A classic favorite worth a visit if you can avoid the crowds.

When I was calling for a reservation, I was put on hold for 10 minutes before someone finally was able to book me. The restaurante is very cramped and noisy with rambunctious children screaming. The menu was very busy, confusing, and difficult to read. We tried the Cleopatra's Barge which is black caviar, sour cream, and potatoes - it was all right. I ordered a one eyed jack and the steak was simply burnt and flavorless. I've had much better steaks at Applebees. My friend ordered a salmon which was also mediocre at best. I would stick to ordering their burgers and torteilini. The pink iced lemonade was really huge and fun to drink. The frozen hot chocolate was amazing to the last drop!!!! We also ordered fruit with fondue. The chocolate fondue was rich and fantastic and there was a decent array of fruit. The staff feel some need to fill up each dish with an inordinate amount of lettuce or watercrest. Also, how could there be only one bathroom?! I had to wait outside the bathroom and just ended up leaving b/c i was tired of the waiters pushing me around. The service was all right and we didnt have to wait too long for the food and our waiter was nice enough. The decor is interesting I guess, but nothing that makes your jaw drop. I would love to go with some other friends again to only order the frozen hot chocolates but make sure you fullfill the $8.50 per person minimum.

Great dessert!

I've enjoyed going to Serendipity 3 for dessert for many years now. Their signature drink, the frozen hot chocolate is delicious, dark and unique but their Forbidden Broadway Sundae actually does it one better. Oodles of hot fudge, dark cake and ice cream layer together to intense and satisfying combination. The portion sizes are massive and are appropriate for sharing. The staff border on the friendly side of a line that separates it from arrogance. Ignore the staff and go for the dessert ... it's a great end to an evening if you can stomach the the 2 hour wait.

I'm surprised to read the negative reviews on here and sorry some people had bad experiences! When I went, we got the exact table we requested immediately and were asked for our orders (of course 2 frozen hot chocolates! but we'll get to that later) and had the nicest waiter ever. He requested we get an app to help us with the subways and told us all about new york; where he lives, where we should go, etc etc. he was so happy and fun and perfect. I think he was gay but otherwise I would've had a huge crush on him haha. I loved how much he contributed to our experience. He made the trip so fun just by being nice and giving us advice. Also, the sandwich I had was amazing and the frozen hot chocolate was to die for. I can't imagine going to nyc without going to serendipity! I'm so sorry for those that had bad experiences because I had an amazing one. My screensaver is a picture of us there and it has been for the past few months. Every time I think of this place it brings back great memories and I'm so glad I went! I hope when I go back the same waiter is there because whether you have a good waiter really makes or brakes the experience and ours was excellent. I recommend this place for anyone who likes to have a good meal and see a new place. the interior is so interesting, you don't run out of things to look at and I definitely felt like I was having a tea party at the mad hatters or something haha...just perfect. :)

The strangest and worst restaurant experience I have ever had!

I stopped at Serendipity for dessert with a small group after lunch at another restaurant. Service was so slow that I needed to leave before I finished my dessert to make it to another appointment and they refused to give me a container for my ice cream!!! I paid $15 for that sundae, and they wouldn't let me take it with me because "they were proud of their dessert" and letting me take the ice cream and pie out "would damage the integrity of the pie." WHAT??? I couldn't even believe I heard these ridiculous words come out of his mouth. And did I mention that this was the manager speaking? The waiter ran to get the manager as soon as I asked for a carryout container! Apparently I not the only uppity customer who has wanted to take their expensive leftovers with them! It was so ridiculous that a lady at the table next to me offered me a used bag to carry my dessert. Unbelievable! I recommend avoiding this crazy place at all costs - there are many great places for dessert in NYC. If you insist on visiting this one, bring your tupperware!

Cons: Rude, insulting service. My wife and I traveled to NYC for our tenth wedding anniversary and booked reservations well in advance. We arrived to Serendipity 3 only to be "greeted" by an unprofessional person who couldn't find us on their reservation list. We were given the third degree in a naked attempt to get us out the door. He summoned his manager so the two of them, standing only a few feet away and at full volume, could openly question whether or not we were *lying* about our reservation! I calmly restated the facts regarding when / how we booked up and who my wife spoke with, but it was clear we were a problem for them and no longer welcome. I maintained my composure, stating I was "very disappointed by this" but inside I felt like shouting at the top of my lungs for having to bear such unacceptable treatment. Three minutes at Serendipity 3 were like a ten minute slap in the face. Serendipity 3-- the only restaurant I've ever loathed. Avoid at all costs. They do not deserve your business.
