I went to Shang last night with 6 people. The worst service I've had in NYC, and I eat out quite often. The restaurant was empty upon arrival at 8:30, which was a telling sign of things to come. To begin, the server refilled our glasses with another table's wine. No apology; we had to ask for new glasses. Since the menu is family style, we asked our server to choose items for us at his discretion. He proceeded to bring almost every dish on the menu including the 5 most expensive. When we were (to our shock) told that we still had a "duck and steak" course, we asked to please cancel as we were completely full. They told us that this was not possible, and it was brought anyway. Nothing was removed from the bill although several plates were not TOUCHED. I understand the risk when you go this route, but we assumed, as is standard, he would be slightly conservative and check in with us throughout the meal. He blatantly took advantage of our request and offered no compensation. The decor is OK and the food is expensive and mediocre.

I was quite impressed with Shang restaurant: Food wise, we got several dishes (we mostly took the waitress recomendations), which were really well executed and inventive. What is really amazing is the way the chef plays with textures (i am very sensitive to that). We took the taro cake, with lemongrass flavored parsnip. It is very well cooked, very soft in the middle and a bit caramelized in the bottom. The lobster lettuce roll was amazing, as they use almonds to give some crispiness to the wrap. The octopus salad was very delicate, although I would have put less pepper. Finally, we took the singapore slaw and garlic chicken which were great as well. I really recommend this place for the food, but the service is also helpful and knowledgable. (The waiter was able to quote the 19 ingredients that are part of the singapore slaw, with no hesitation...) Note that there is a terrace/ rooftop next to the restaurant that is very nice and serves great cocktails.

I went to Shang expecting great food and good enough service. I was sorely dissapointed. I called the restaurant three times to confirm a round table for my group of 10. When I got there they had set us up elsewhere, but what really annoyed me is that they acted like they were not informed of my request. Then, once we were finally seated, we were told the menu had changed from what is advertised on their website. It took the waiter 15 minutes just to recite the prix fix menu to us since they "ran out of menus." On top of all this, the waiter FORGOT to place all orders. Half the table was done with the meal by the time the rest got theirs. The manager apologized for the inconvenience and even sent us a bottle of champagne, but for all the chaos we would have preferred to have gone somewhere else. Lastly, when we left we were told that the pool was closed, when it is in fact OPEN. Even New York Magazine posted that the pool opened last week. Shang is totally disorganized and run by fools.

went here with a friend last night... really wanted to love it as i'm from Toronto and Susur is a hometown hero, but it was just okay... the decor is nice but nothing special... the service was good - our server gave us many helpful recommendations, and Justin the host took good care of us, checking on us at the bar while we were waiting, and seating us promptly... the food was good but not great - the once exception was the lobster bisque, which was outstanding. we had the yellowtail sashimi as well, which i quite liked but my friend not so much... the lobster croquettes lettuce wraps were just kind of weird - a large lump of battered and fried lobster (and shrimp?) meat on lettuce.. the avocado & cucumber salad was tasty but swimming in an oily soy dressing... our duck main looked gorgeous but was too chewy for my liking, and served on the cool side... we also had the cauliflower and lentil in curry sauce, which was quite tasty... presentation of the food was beautiful but the flavors didn't quite match up... it was a nice dinner but really nothing to write home about...
