Shanghai Pavilion has lost their liquor license. We decided to give it a try any way last Wednesday as it was raining and we didn't have a backup plan. Place at 8:00 p.m. had only one other small group of eaters. Even so, welcome was non- existent. Food was bland at best and the service was indifferent throughout.

HORRIBLE and was ISOLATED from other guests.

So one would think that being seated at the front, by the window is fantastic, right...WRONG! They totally isolated us from others seated in the restaurant and then FORGOT about us! Now, you might be thinking, why didn't u ask for a different seat? By the time I realized that they weren't seating other parties of 2 by the window, our appetizer arrived. I just hated the way they treated us. One more thing....the food was average. Nothing to rave about.

Authentic Shanghainese Food

Hmm... NYMag gave them a critic's pick. I have no idea why an authentic Chinese restaurant got located in the stuffy UES w/ reviewers who probably know next to nothing about Chinese cuisine. Their soup dumplings beat Joe Shanghai's hands down. Unlike 90% of Chinese restaurants, Shanghai Pavilion isn't oily and the seafood is fresh. Some of the best Shanghainese food in NYC.

Great for the price

My friends and I went to Shanghai Pavilion for a going away dinner. We wanted something classy yet affordable. Shanghai Pavillion was the perfect place for us. Since we had a big group, they seated us at a large rounded table, complete with a spin top. The service there was amazing. We had no problem setting up a reservation for 14. The staff was nice and very attentive to our needs. I myself ordered Dim Sum Pork & Dim Sum Chicken and both were tasty. Other people got usual chinese food like Sesame Chicken, Beef and Broccoli, etc. Every dish tasted was superb. If you like spicy you can get the right amount of spice or the opposite if you don't. The only drawback is that not all of the meals come with rice. You have to order a side rice but it's only $1 or $2 more. The decor was very calming and modern. The place seems a bit smaller but that can be looked as intimate. My friends and I will definitely be going again.

shanghai pavilion- save your money, don't eat here

The food at the restaurant is terrible. The wonton soup was served lukewarm, had no vegtables in it, just a few microscopic shreds of pork. Lobster cantonese, was lukewarm,some type of viscous sauce with a few pieces of canned mushrooms and frozen peas. Sauce very bad. No rice served unless you make a special request. we also had to request tea. The fried rice was tasteless and tepid in temperature. The duck was horrible. Deep fried served ofer a few shreds of iceberg lettuce. Egg roll wrapper was tougher than shoe leather. This was not a "dining experience" the food was just awful. Decor is pleasant. Service not good. Waiter forgot to order one of the main dishes we ordered. All in all, eating here was a disaster. Bad food, bad service , high prices.

WOULD UP IN THE E.R. AFTER CRAB DUMPLINGS ALMOST KILLED ME FROM SHANGHAI. STAFF NO CONCERN AT ALL ABOUT PATRONS. ROUTINELY OVERCHARGES. THOUGHT FOOD POISONING INCIDENT WAS "FUNNY". WOMAN WHO ANSWERS PHONE "SHELLY" VOTED WORST HOSTESS OF 2009. SPARE THIS NIGHTMARE.
