Everyone needs to try this place

Initially put off by the location in the Financial District, my wife and I finally decided to give this place a go just to see if the menu tasted as good as it sounded. From the beginning, we were delighted. The price of the three-course tasting menu is ridiculously affordable considering what we got - the three eponymous courses, preceded by an amuse bouche, preceded by a little platter of tasty treats that would each serve as an amuse bouche elsewhere though not identified as such here, and all topped off with an after-dessert plate of truffles and other sweet treats. And none of these were throwaway items. Each thrilled with its own creative blend of remarkably distilled flavors. We both got fish entrees and found them impeccably cooked. There is a tremendous number of staff on hand, so you never feel abandoned at any point in the night, and the floor manager made a point of checking how we were enjoying everything. One point off for a bit of a protracted wait for the check at the end. The location allows for a fairly large restaurant space that is a modernist tableau, albeit a tad emotionally cold. We have had only one other dining experience in New York that rivaled how we felt at the end of the night. Definitely try this place out.
Tasteless and Overpriced Food, Good Service

My girlfriend and I went to SHO with another couple. At first, given the price and ambiance I was expecting a 5 star meal equivalent to the Moderne, Per Se, or Del Posto. I had never heard of this chef but that didn’t taint my opinion at all. The starting course, which comprised of a few small bites of things were very good. I was impressed at the explosive flavor that was packed in such small pieces of food. From then on I was expecting a stellar meal. However, this is not what we got. My girlfriend ordered the tuna sashimi appetizer, which was actually quite good. For our entrees I ordered the lamb. It came out in small rolls with black pepper on the side. The meat was of a nice cut but absolutely tasteless. I had to salt it myself. My friend ordered the rabbit, which sounded good. When it came out it didn’t look too appetizing. It looked more like a terrine than a piece of loin. The texture wasn’t too appetizing at all either. The service was very good though. It was definitely 5 star service but not 5 star food. The bill was $600 and felt that the food wasn’t worth paying even one-third that price. The décor and ambiance were very nice though. If you want to spend a lot of money I would suggest going to the Moderne for impeccable food.
surprisingly great food for cost

I feel like my experience at this restaurant compares to top restaurants such as Le Bernadin or Jean Georges... yet it was half the price of what I paid for those restaurants. (I did the 3 course prix fixe for 69 dollars). Service was great- only didn't like how they kept switching servers so we were a bit lost as to whom we were supposed to go to when we had questions. It seemed like all the waiters served as one team? Not sure exactly. Food was amazing... the peeky toe crab appetizer and the lobster entree were the stand out dishes. The dessert cheese plate my boyfriend tried was the only downer of the night. (I'm not a big cheese person, but my boyfriend usually is- and he wasn't a fan of the spread.) Also the decor/design of the restaurant was quite magnificent.
