What a great american restaurant, big portions, old time service, great bar, wonderful steaks and great side dishes and desserts! A must every time I am in NYC. I love the "old" waiters and their coconut cake is decadent!

Restaurant Week- a disappointment

I heard mixed reviews about Smith & Wollensky. I went there for dinner during Restaurant Week and felt I paid the $46 (tax+tip) for a dinner whose quality did not match the price tag. I ordered the Halibut, which had no flavor whatsoever. My friend ordered the Filet Mignon which arrived with just the meat and no sides. They offered sides but emphasized at the extra cost. My appetizer, a salad, looked like they bought the salad from the local supermarket and dumped sauce over it. The only thing that was impressive was the bread basket. Even the dessert seemed very supermarket-ish. It is in the restaurant's interest to impress the diner during restaurant week and Smith and Wollensky succeeded at failing. If they're going to offer such stingy meals then they shouldn't even bother participating.

I felt out of place in this dark suits gray haired joint. The service is impeccable and unpretentious (specially if they know you by your last name). Pricey for a lunch ($180 for 2). The Cajun Steak (not on menu) was superb, no fuss great slab of gigantic proportions. Asparagus with a butter sauce, a house salad... delish with fresh crispy romaine and giant chunks of crispy bacon.
Refreshing break from the fancy-schmancy try too hard establishments.

I went to Smith & Wollensky last week and found out that they have a killer wine list made only of American Wines (although I did talk the waiter into showing me a small, handwritten list of first growths!). That takes BALLS! What about my favorite Bordeauxs? Or Chianti? Or any other internatinal great wine!??! Regardless - I had a GREAT time and had great food. I can't wait to go back!

The guys and gals who swear by Atkins love this place. Tons of protien via steaks and chops by the pounds not ounces. The food is very good, the service steak house appropriate and the prices are expense account adjusted. More out of towners than locals, but when you need a low carb night, this is a good alternative.

This place is what you'd expect an old NY steakhouse to look and feel like. We enjoyed our cold lobster appetisers, as well as our steaks and side dishes. The food was great. The waiters are a mix of snotty and indifferent, but it goes with the ambience. Be prepared to leave a large sum of money. Good place to go when you're on the expense account.

Looking forward to a fabulous steak, it turned out to be mediocre, served by waiters with a dismissive attitude, in a cramped, uncomfortable setting.
You can do better...
