It's surprisingly hard in Manhattan to find a reasonably comfortable place to have lunch and read. It is equally hard to find cheap vegetarian food. This is why I am not totally trashing this place. However, there is someone who works at 'Snice who is extremely rude to customers. He made a snide comment to me once while I was waiting on line, and I have witnessed him chastise a number of customers quite rudely. Most of the people who work there are polite and efficient, but having witnessed this one man (a manager, perhaps?) in action, I have dubbed him 'Snasty. The food is good, and the place has a modest but comfortable decor, but when you go, watch out for 'Snasty.

Keep your wallet tight and still dine in like a fussy vegan!

Where else can my picky vegan friends enjoy heartful, tasty 'wiches in the city? The setting is great; spacious seating areas, sensible waiters who know better not to nag customers. All 'wiches are accompanied by fresh, colorful salads. I have no complaints about this place.

Among vegetarian places in the area, I stay faithful to 'SNICE. I've tried almost everything from the menu, no complaints. I work in Tribeca and I walk to 'snice to eat or take out. The hummus sandwich with roasted red peppers, the tempeh reuben with kraut and the smoked tempeh wrap with avocado a must try. Their salads and smoothies with soy milk are just great. Healthy and fresh food. I know they opened another one is Park slope this past summer, I want to check it out.

'snice (horrible name, IMHO) used to be a hardware store--the oldest hardware store in the city, in fact. (The store, Garber's Hardware, still exists over on Washington Street.) They have retained the orange color scheme, and used it to good effect. They also have a High Line motif going on; the owner, an affable guy named Mike told me this himself. But it's the food, stupid. They have the best soups, and sandwiches, and cakes, and muffins...and it's all vegetarian; much of it is vegan. The vegan cupcakes are loved by one and all (one of those "I can't believe it's vegan" things.) My favorite sandwich there has the unappetizing name of "Vegan Panini;" not surprisingly, it's the favorite sandwich of many other customers, too. They now also have a 'snice in Park Slope; I haven't been there yet, but it's another reason to love Brooklyn.

This laid back vegetarian restaurant has great sandwiches, salads, pastries, and soup. The servings are generous. The Roasted Vegetable Panini, Vegan Panini and Chocolate Cherry cookie are some of my favorites. It's not fancy, but it's comfortable. The owners and people who work there make you feel welcome. There's an eclectic mix of music on the CD player and paintings or photos by a local artist on display. It reminds me a bit of 1960's Greenwich Village coffee houses. If you want a tasty meal, go to 'Snice. It's nice.

I had the smoked tempeh wrap with chipotle mayo and it was unbelievably delicioius. I work ten blocks south but hike up here a couple times a week. It's really just a cafe with great food and New Order on the soundtrack, which made me feel like I was in college again...except its a decade later...

the interior of this space is unattractive. it just feels like a big store that's been emptied out and then had a counter, some tables and some chairs imported so they could call it a cafe. the patio in the back is cramped and the acoustic inside are annoying. the staff is personable; the food, decent but unremarkable; the crowd, friendly enough. overall, it feels like a missed opportunity.
