Even though I don't consider myself a "foodie", I still know what tastes good. My husband and I had dinner at the Spice Market on a last minute trip to NYC and we were both pleasantly surprised. The decor is exactly our taste and style, so we went nuts for it. We ordered the Chicken Samosas, the Avocado Salad (with radishes and chinese onion rings, wow) and the Vietnamese Chicken. If you decide to eat here, you have to order 1 of those! Everything was served fast, friendly, and family-style. The prices weren't ridiculous and were expected for dinner in the city. Its silly, but I even loved the waiters' uniforms. I love this place!

Disappointing service and Food

While the food was okay and the decor/space is great the service was very weak. All the food was very heavily pushed upon our table. We were told that we really need to order an appetizer and an entree for LUNCH as well as rice and sides. They then forgot one of our rices and one of our sides, which never came but we were charged for of course. Probably will not return....

Though I wouldnt go here on a regular occassion. This place was definately really cool, and i would def recommend it to anyone visiting new york. The food is superb, the decor is really cool. On the downside it is a little loud, and you have so many waiters that you dont know who to talk to nor do you get any real explanation or service on anything. Prices are a little high, but it is family style, but what do you expect, it is a JG restaurant after all. Overall I would reccommend it however.

After a few mishappenings in Ny during our honeymoon with my husband, our lunch in Spice Market was an apocalypse!Begining from the decoration and the atmposphere, to the polite stuff and great background lounge music, the ginger margaritas and the fantastic tasting menu, all was excellent! I would go back there definately!

Awful food, only go for drinks

Great drinks and decor. I had the wings and samosas for appetizers and they were decently good. The main courses were bland and boring. Do not order the Shanghai Spice Noodles. The dish has no flavor at all. It was so tasteless that we did not eat any of it and the waitress took it off our check. Spice Market is another Asian-fusion restaurant failure among many in New York. Just go to a real Asian restaurant instead. You will be 10x happier.

THIS PLACE SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE IN THE LIST OF THE MOST "AWFUL WITH A NAME" . THE FOOD IS A DESASTER, SMELLS HORRIBLE AND TASTE WORST AND EVERYBODY HERE FROM THE HOSTESS TO THE MANAGER HAVE ATTITUDE. AND MANAGER, BE MORE PROFESSIONAL . DONT SCREAM AT YOUR EMPLOYEES IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE RESTAURANT..WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME

Walking into the Spice Market, is quite a treat. Everywhere you look is so different and so pretty. I enjoyed eating in the downstairs, where it was more quiet. The service was amazing - every staff was so friendly and helpful. They even took our pictures! Food was quite good, I really recommend the curry chicken - it melts in your mouth! Prices were extremely reasonable and I like the concept of sharing all the foods. Would definately recommend.

After 5 times at Spice Market, I refuse to ever give it another chance. If going for drinks or apps. then Spice Market is quick, hip, trendy--- epitome of the Meatpacking crowd. If you are going for dinner...you may not even be sat. I have been turned away several times when 2/3 of the place was empty. The last time I went the hostess forgot to grab me at the bar and inform me my table was ready 30 minutes after my reservation. My waitress was great but my halibut tasted like it was rolled around in a salt mine, and my boyfriend and I experienced some serious after effects the next day.

Tasty Food - Awful Management

Arrived at 10pm, no reservations on a Sat night - so we were told it was a 2 hr wait. I had to wait for friends to arrive so we stuck it out. we were seated at midnight - at the WORST table in the joint - in the middle of the room on the lower level, no backs to the stools. It was a bar table! A table exactly like the one I sat at waiting for 2 hrs for dinner. We asked to be moved and eventually were - after the hostess was incredulous that we actually waited 2 hours for the table. Ordered the tasting menu - but 10 min later the mgr told us that the "pace of the food would be faster than normal because it was so late and the kitchen was closing." Why the hell did you take our name and seat us then?? The servers were nice, we told our waitress about the frustrating experience, so the mgr came back with some schmoozy schpiel about free drinks - totally insulting. Food was tasty, but we were treated like sh*t. Based on that, I could not go back. And I work in the industry.

Some of the worst food I've had in an upscale/highly-rated restaurant

I finally decided to try SM after reading great reviews. While the decor, service, and bar drinks were great, the food was so bad that I could only manage one bite per dish. We ordered all of the highly-recommended dishes. They went beyond lackluster to being downright difficult to eat because of the overwhelmingly heavy, cloying sauces and preparations—nothing like real Asian street food. The black pepper pineapple shrimp bathed in a tar-like tamarindy sauce massacred the shrimp, rendering them unidentifiable. The chicken wings dipped in a gravelly mystery sauce masking the chicken's flavor and making it thoroughly unappetizing. I've never had to spit out so many chunks of pure fat as I did from the pork vindaloo, which resembled a thick mud stew. The kufi dessert was the best part of our meal, though unmemorably so. Go to Chinatown, Bangkok, or Delhi to get the original, delectable dishes and save your dollars for other upscale restaurants that actually deliver. In trying so hard to make Asian street food chic, JGV has actually made it one of the worst eating experiences I've had in years of nearly seven-day-a-week NYC restaurant patronage.
