You're paying for a scene...and that's it

If you want to pay for a scene or experience definitely come to Spice Market. The ambiance and decor are out of this world and you feel like you've been transformed into some mystical lounge. The uniforms worn my staff truly add to the scene as well. However when it comes to food I was utterly disappointed. I have no idea why they make it a point to stress everything is served family style because it is certainly not. Portion sizes were very small and economically it would be more sense for them to have everyone order their own apps. and entrees. In addition if you plan on sitting downstairs in one of the really cool private rooms--which I did...be prepared to gather up our own dishes and stemware because there is no way servers/bussers can reach down the table and you are forced to pass everything down... The dessert was my favorite part of the meal. I highly recommend the ovaltine gulfi...it was heaven in my mouth.

Some of the worst food I've had in an upscale/highly-rated restaurant

I finally decided to try SM after reading great reviews. While the decor, service, and bar drinks were great, the food was so bad that I could only manage one bite per dish. We ordered all of the highly-recommended dishes. They went beyond lackluster to being downright difficult to eat because of the overwhelmingly heavy, cloying sauces and preparations—nothing like real Asian street food. The black pepper pineapple shrimp bathed in a tar-like tamarindy sauce massacred the shrimp, rendering them unidentifiable. The chicken wings dipped in a gravelly mystery sauce masking the chicken's flavor and making it thoroughly unappetizing. I've never had to spit out so many chunks of pure fat as I did from the pork vindaloo, which resembled a thick mud stew. The kufi dessert was the best part of our meal, though unmemorably so. Go to Chinatown, Bangkok, or Delhi to get the original, delectable dishes and save your dollars for other upscale restaurants that actually deliver. In trying so hard to make Asian street food chic, JGV has actually made it one of the worst eating experiences I've had in years of nearly seven-day-a-week NYC restaurant patronage.

Disappointing service and Food

While the food was okay and the decor/space is great the service was very weak. All the food was very heavily pushed upon our table. We were told that we really need to order an appetizer and an entree for LUNCH as well as rice and sides. They then forgot one of our rices and one of our sides, which never came but we were charged for of course. Probably will not return....

Hostess was a HORROR! She didn't even greet us with a hello or welcome at the door. just stood there with a what do you want attitude while yacking it up with another host. never going back. food sucks too. if you like over priced food that comes out whenever they care to bring it, fake trendy, attitude from high school chicks with bikini-brains, and lot of noise...go here!

What a tragedy. My girlfriend tried to get a reservation at this place for over a month. When we finally did we were v. excited, but it wore off quickly. The beautiful space and cool crowd was quickly offset by the poor service and below average food. The hostesses were nice, as was our waiter. He spent time explaining menu items to us, but refused to make any substitutions. Strike one. Be careful what you request when they ask the question, "What kind of water would you like?" Strike two. The food was mediocre at best (the highly recommended mushroom spring rolls were awful), although the garlic-chili noodles were interesting. The best part of dinner was the coconut sticky rice (should have ordered several and skipped the appetizers). Another upsetting aspect was the sight of many empty tables. It was Friday night, for God's sake. Who are they saving them for? Seems like their reputation is catching up with them.

Jean Georges disappoints again...

This restaurant is the epitome of what annoys me about "hot" restaurants. It gets built up and built up, and then there is the spectacular let-down. First, you have to make a reservation one month to the day in advance. Even then, I could only get a 10 pm reservation for a Monday night. Obviously, I wasn't "hot" enough. Well, when we got there, we had to wait, even though tables were clearly available. The cocktails were good, but the food that then proceded was average. Average! From Jean Georges! Nothing whatsoever was memorable about the food except that it was unmemorable. Their idea about "service" is ridiculous. They bring out dishes in whatever order they are completed. This is absurd and is ultimately sheer laziness. Now, the decor was spectacular (like the let-down), and I would gladly return for cocktails at the bar downstairs. Otherwise, forget it.

WHAT A LET DOWN...I went to see for myself after reading the reviews...ALL BAD REVIEWS WERE CORRECT!!

I had checked all of the reviews before taking a friend to Spice Market...I though maybe I'd see for myself and just maybe I'd like it...I should have listened better to the reviews. I was so dissapointed with the food, service, (they had too much staff just standing around and socializing.) I thought the exposed kitchen was distracting. The Food was extrememly overrated...It was soooooo bad. I have had better chicken wings for take out and the spring rolls smelled worse than they tasted (very fishy)... I will never come here again. Stick to local authentic cuisine for what you really want...this place was executed very poorly.

Bad Crowd. Bad Management.

My table were seated next to this table where a 60 year old man with money was eating with four girls (all looked under 21) who he was encouraging to kiss and touch each other. I was sitting exactly across from him, and at one point I made eye contact and gave him a very disapproving look. During the meal, the guy offered the waitress US$500 for her top because one of the girls liked it. The waitress was actually contemplating selling her top to this guy! It was really gross. At this point we asked the restaurant staff to evict them and they wouldn't. Anyway, when this guy went to leave, he sent the girls over to me to ask me why I was looking at them and then said, maybe I want to join them. I could not believe that management allowed them to stay in the restaurant and that they allowed them to harass other diners. It was truly the worst restaurant experience I have ever had and definitely not what I expect from a supposedly up-market NY restaurant. I was bitterly disappointed.
