"Stank" Market

A bunch of my friends planned my bachelorette party in NYC for May 19. We had 9:45 dinner reservations at Spice Market and weren't seated until almost 11:00. Waitor(s) were complete idiots; spilled some "sauce" all over my friend's black dress-After ordering $350.00 in appetizers alone (we didn't even get our main course) we demanded our bill and left-UNSATISFIED-and hungry. Worst dining experience of MY LIFE! And that's no joke- Go there for drinks but service is terrible. Will never step foot in that place again.

Maybe I'm a bit too old. But I like to digest my food. Yes, English Sarcasm!! I don't want to be sharing a seat with a complete stranger either. Pack 'em and stack 'em mentality. Starters and main courses were good. Shrimp soup good, as was halibut and cod mains. Forget the dessert though. Wine list not great either. Very average. Handy for the clubs though!!

I'm happy I can say I've been, but Spice Market won't be at the top of my list to go back. The service was lacking. Waited 10 minutes to order drinks, and after we ordered food, our waiter was barely around. Otherwise I would have given a higher rating. The food was decent, and what I would expect for what I'm paying. The drinks were very good and worth returning to the bar for drinks with friends or co-workers. And the coconut sorbet was excellent!

I had read about the spice market and was very curious. I expected food stalls with many different variations of food. Instead, it is a very nicely decorated posh restaurant and one has high expectations regarding uniqueness and quality of food. Servicing is exquisite but then in the end the food itself was very disappointing. While served with a lot of aplomb the actual food is not really exciting and one gets better and tastier food in any food stall in a real Thai market or street. I got a steak for USD35 and had to return it because it was burned to charcoal!! on the exterior. Even the second run was not exceptional and the sauce served with it (made of Koriander leaves) was really nothing special.

Highly Spiced, Lacking Flavor

While the decor is certainly something to behold, the food is somewhat less inspiring. The restaurant is Disney like, transporting you to a place far, far away. The food is good, certainly fitting of the decor, but not worthy of an 'excellent.' It's a terrific place to see and be seen, appearing to be better suited as a night-spot than a restaurant. If you're in search of an 'authentic' experience you'll do just as well near the intersection of Mott and Canal.

Nice Restaurant Bad Attitude

This is a beautiful room, serving some very nice food, with pleasant and helpful service - provided you eat at odd hours. If you are happy with eating dinner at tea-time, or after 10 pm, then this place is for you. The attitude of the reservations manager is digraceful. He insists that only friends of Jean-George may have reservations at conventional dinner times, regardless of how far in advance one tries to book. This reservations policy leaves a bad taste, no matter how good the food or charming the space. Don't play up to them. Let Jean-George rely on his friends for success!

I got obnoxious velvet rope treatment at the door & I had a reservation! Once inside , I loved the decor, food(avocado salad, halibut), and drinks(east india cocktail). Unfortunately, I won't enjoy the food again, as I don't support establishments that treat me rudely. Their loss, as I eat out at trendy places a few times a week!

Although getting a reservation was a real challenge we had a awesome meal. We were seated at a very comfortable table with a view of the open kitchen (I counted 16 line cooks and chefs)Service was timely but server was not very engaging (poured sparkling water over my wifes "NYC tap" 3 times). Food came out fast and hot, flavors were right on and prices were reasonable. Loved the Samosas, Curried Chicken and the Short Ribs were off the charts! The atmosphere alone with all the carved malasian wood makes this place feel exotic and fun.

The decor was beautiful. Beautiful as well were the hosts, servers, people dining and those drinking at the bar. Excellent service as well. Food? Well, the food was good, not spectacular, and something you can get in inexpensive to moderate range restaurants and it would be the same quality and taste. I was surprised the chicken curry was on the bone for an upscale restaurant. It was succulent and tender but, quite simple, really. The food was the only disappointment because it's not worth the price, but if you want to be in a beautiful people hip scene, and that's all that matters, or go there for drinks, then Spice Market may be worth it to you. Note: There should be a "Maybe" option for the "Would you go back" question.

The restaurant certainly lives up to its name: both in setting and food. The dishes were good (especially the blackbean shrimp with pineapple), but paled by comparison to the decor. The staff was helpful and friendlier than expected. Would go there again for a fun night with friends. P.S. Where were all the beautiful people?!
