you step into another world.......something to take in wherever you walk or look.....no detail overlooked from the staff, to the way I watched how a table was set, to every design element, no matter where you looked. it takes you in instantly and envelopes you............we had several appetizers including shaved tuna with thin slices of Asian pears in a cool sauce, the mushroom eggrolls in a distinctive green sauce (all of the sauces were distinctive...a touch a spice, a hint of sweet.all unto themselves and the selections they were served with.......none overwhelming the others)........and a portion of chicken in a warm peanut sauce presented on a mini-mini grill with a hot stone to keep it warm.........perhaps first among equals of the really great New York spots

The Singapore and Johore Straits are in the Meatpacking District
By martin_chamois on 8/2/2004
In the middle of the Meatpacking District, the Spice Market captures all the senses that one experiences in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta. The overwhelming intoxication of flavors, odors, textures and light provides for a most satisfying expereince. Wonderful menu, food, preparation, service and ambience.

Spice Market definitely merits a return trip. The decor, the food and the drinks were incredible. Our favorite was the skewered beef appetizer - it literally melted in your mouth. We also loved the vegetable side dishes - the sugar snap peas with water chestnuts and shiitake mushrooms and the broccoli and baby corn. Only objection? Not enough really spicy food! Can't wait to go back.
More hype than substance

Food was only OK, nothing special. Decor was interesting.
tantalizing taste buds

At first look, well, you don't know where to look first, the place takes you over, you want to see it all, and it is certainly worth seeing. As for the food, each new dish enticed our nostrils and titillated our palates. We devoured spice market with our eyes and with our mouths It was a wonderful, wonderful meal.
Disappointing food in a theme park setting
By naftool on 6/23/2004
Theme park design, mediocre and pretentious food (not even close to 66), inconsistent service.
Spice Market has what it takes!

Although getting a reservation was a real challenge we had a awesome meal. We were seated at a very comfortable table with a view of the open kitchen (I counted 16 line cooks and chefs)Service was timely but server was not very engaging (poured sparkling water over my wifes "NYC tap" 3 times). Food came out fast and hot, flavors were right on and prices were reasonable. Loved the Samosas, Curried Chicken and the Short Ribs were off the charts! The atmosphere alone with all the carved malasian wood makes this place feel exotic and fun.
awful service, great food

I got obnoxious velvet rope treatment at the door & I had a reservation! Once inside , I loved the decor, food(avocado salad, halibut), and drinks(east india cocktail). Unfortunately, I won't enjoy the food again, as I don't support establishments that treat me rudely. Their loss, as I eat out at trendy places a few times a week!

Well I must say I wasnt expecting the service, atmosphere and decor to be so friggin' wonderfully GOOD. From the person KIM who answered the phone and spoke in such a professional and warming matter, to the people at the door who greet you with a BIG smile.this place rocks and will go far. The bartender (luka??? niko?)downstairs was so wonderful. I had stopped in for a quick drink and bite after work and this place fit in so well. TRY the lobster rolls (perfectly fresh mmmmm) and the Spicy pepper shrimp ( I was very very impressed). I actually stayed a little later than normal, meeting people outside in 'smokers-corner'. LOVED the music, and the vibe, just warm fun, clean. (AND to the NEGATIVE-FOLKS who sat beside me at the downstairs bar complaining about everything, SHUT THE F**K UP.....go somewhere else, this place was tres cool and fun)! ONE thing: GET A PATIO:) I will be back for sure, and would recommend it for a date, a group of friends or a quick bite. SPICE MARKET ROCKS!! You have a BIG fan:) Annie:)
