Best Italian on UWS

I noticed Spiga while I was walking home from a soccer game on a Sunday morning. I immediately noticed that it was Michelin rated and the menu looked excellent so I had to try it. My wife and I went to Spiga a few nights later and have been going back ever since. A great meal starts with great bread. Spiga gets their bread from a bakery in the Bronx, which is the best bread that I have had outside of Italy. This bread is crusty and airy and goes together perfectly with Spiga's selection of cured meats and cheeses which are all delictable. Their wine list is superb. All of their pastas are fresh and made in house. They even make their own burrata and have mozzarella di bufala. Their second courses are good and their desserts are excellent. Some of the servers are Italian so therefore they obviously are knowledgeable of the menu. Spiga has high ceilings and a rustic decor. This is hands down the best Italian restaurant on the UWS.

We came without reservations so we had to sit at the bar. The bartender was knowledgeable about everything. The food was innovative, fresh, delicious. My husband felt the portions were a bit small. I found the wine list lacking with only Italian offerings. I understand the concept, but just because you ate eating Italian, doesn't mean you should be limited to drinking wines from those regions. They seem quite pleased with their choices. I disagree it is the best strategy. Anyway, dessert was wonderful. We had the bread pudding. It wasn't heavy or overwhelming, just perfect.

Went here once with a boyfriend when our standby was too busy (Celeste's around the corner). The food is amazing, we split 3 dishes (which they kindly separated onto 2 plates for us and served as 3 courses) and had some amazing food. The service was less than stellar (a bit slow and they're quick to turn you out) especially given that it is so pricey (even for the area). If you're not picky about your service then it's fine, the food almost makes up for it.

Sad decline of a great restaurant

Very disappointing dinner at what used to be a favorite. Zucchini timbales, which were once bright and fresh, are now blanketed in a thick layer of green-can grated parmesan. A mushroom lasagne came drowned in what I swear was a can of Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup. When we asked where the second scallop was in the special soup “with two grilled scallops”, the waiter told us it may have sank in the soup (it hadn’t). Gone are the days of cocoa gnocchi and “mushrooms three ways” – this new owner has soiled Spiga.

Spiga has a wine list that begins with what would be considered "an expensive range" for wines that would normally be considered table wines. When we asked the waiter about the difference between two wines on their wine list, the waiter said that the two wines were essentially the same. Why then have two identical wines at different prices? He then went on to offer us a more expensive "special" wine. Of course, the special was also more expensive. Speaking quickly, he tried to push this on us. Spiga's wine list isn't just expensive, it's over-priced.

I highly recommend Spiga to everyone who likes tasty, innovative, and elegant food as well as subtle flavours. This is one of my favorite Italian restaurants in the city. The menu is creative and very interestng and makes the difference with too many other Italians where you will find four different types of pasta with tomato sauce... The food is just amazing, their meat is juicy and tendre, the pasta always fresh, and for gnocci lovers please try the ones with chocolate in winter! The tuna with peppers and pinapple in the summer is also delicious. The staff is very friendly, and the wines list very rich. Excellent experience, always a pleasure going there!

I liked the food. It is small portioned, but delicious. What I have a big problem is that they seemed to be rushing you out of the restaraunt. The minute you finished one course, they shove another on you. And the restaurant wasn't even that busy. I feel very rushed and cann't relax in a restaurant like this. Would not go back.
