I will never, ever, set foot in this restaurant. The manager on the phone was so incredibly rude that I will never, ever, eat here. There are too many excellent sushi restaurants in this city for me to waste my time someplace where they don't respect their customers. The manager was incredibly disrespectful and rude. **--I am adding to this review because I just spoke with the manager at Sushi of Gari on the UES -- he was very apologetic and respectful when I complained about the manager at Sushi of Gari 46. Even though the experience is ruined for me and I will probably still not eat at Sushi of Gari 46 due to the manager being so rude, it should be mentioned that the Manager at the UES location was polite.**

I had a very very bad experience with Sushi of Gari. I ordered food from them twice and never will again. I tried to give them the benefit of doubt after my first horrible experience (I was screamed at on the phone by the manager and lied to about my delivery and then hung up on twice). The second time the manager called me to try to convince me to literally cancel my order. I told him I wanted my food since I had paid for it already through my SeamlessWeb account and he aggressively started yelling at me, telling me that his delivery person had too many packages to deliver. This was shockingly bad service. I had a simple request - order some sushi for delivery. Both times this mundane service turned into a nightmarish procedure that sucked up way too much time and energy. For such an innovative and fine restaurant, I would rank their service below that of the cheap Chinese restaurant around the corner. Shameful.

As good as any sushi I've ever had. My guest and I craved a little more after the chef's excellent choices from the tasting menu, so we said "surprise us." Not only were the additional items as good as the others, but the price on the check was a little surprising as well. Still, the service, ambience and quality couldn't be beat.

Traditionalist sushi snobs typically consider Chef Gari's innovations to be culinary mutilation. They take offense to the way he alters the taste and textural integrity of fine raw fish with his cooking technique. To them, sushi should be prepared and consumed in its purest form, Edomae style (Old Tokyo). As a sushi lover who also appreciates fine traditional sushi, I understand where they're coming from, but I still can't help but to love Gari's stuff. It's fun, it's different, and although pricey, I really don't mind splurging on stuff that just tastes so good to me. Go, try it, and make up your own mind about it. (I must note that it's only worth it if you sit at the sushi bar and get served omakase direct from a chef.)

Based on reviews I was expecting really interesting and varied dishes. I think I expected too much. What I consider good fish is raw fish; you can grill almost any quality of fish but you can only serve the freshest raw ones. Therefore I was disappointed to receive tuna, toro, salmon with skin, a type of oyster, yellowtail all grilled/BBQed. Although they were delicious, it was repetitive and hid the quality of the fish. The omakase fish variety was small. I received mackerel twice. I don't consider mackerel high on the fish hierarchy. The worst item of my $100 omakase was the spicy tuna handroll. Nevermind that a spicy tuna handroll can be found in the cheapest of sushi joints in the suburbs; the nori it was wrapped in had completely lost its crispness and reminded me of what I could expect to find in the cheapest of sushi joints. No usage of natto, pickles, rice wine, tofu, mushrooms, fruits, land animals, or interesting shellfish. The occassional tiny squirts of sauces are mostly forgettable. Although most of the items were good, creativity was not much better than ordinary except at a much higher price for exclusivity's sake. The decor is sterile.

I was taken here by a date, and figured it was his 'around-the-corner' place. I was wrong. Completely and utterly. The sashimi was quality, each cut meticulous, precise. Each dish-- masterful. Eating here reminded me of Japanese restaurants in Asia. Authentic, simple, yet powerful, and completely satisfying.

Liked the creative bites of Chef Gari. Every bite had a burst of surprising tastes and texture. The chef's choice menu is worth a try.

Sushi of Gari epitomizes the idea that sushi is a form of [food] art. The chef’s choice – the thing to get, are pieces of sushi (usually 8-10 pieces) and a roll that the chef creates for you, depending on how much specify you want to spend ($50 minimum/person and up). Although the chef’s choice is pricey, it’s more of an experience than just a good sushi meal because each piece is carefully created as a tasting experience. It’s definitely recommended to make a reservation on the weekends, since it’s difficult walk-in and get a table. Although the wait staff is not personable, the service is more efficient-like. If you don’t want to spend $50/more for the chief’s choice, I would recommend getting a bunch of rolls (i.e. yellowtail & scallion, spicy shrimp tempura, fried oyster roll) because they have the best rolls in NY.
