Dear Clowns: Yasuda is the best Sushi not only in NYC, but in the world. Bar none, and I've been all over the world. Yes the service is a little 'wacky' but that's part of Chef Yasuda's genius. The fact that there are negative reviews on here show either a lack of understanding about what truly good sushi is, or more likely, a bunch of people who work at Inasa or Masa who are trying to bring the ratings of this institution down. Best Sushi in the World.

The sushi is exquisite, boasting a host of rare options. While the staff and chefs are traditional (think soup nazi), a visit to this sushi heaven is well worth confirming to such rigid principles for a night. We have been to every sushi restaurant in the City and view Yasuda as the number one option.

A Disgrace to Japanese Hospitality

Never mind the utterly charmless, functional interior. What we did mind was the utterly charmless attitude of the staff. Notoriously hard to book, we were warned to arrive on time lest we lose our table. Good thing we did as it was half empty at 930pm last Friday night. Rushed through our orders, tiny portions arrived at pace. The famed sushi was hit (sweet silky oysters, rainbow trout) and miss (sandy clams, mushy shrimp), while suspiciously waterlogged toro sashimi was unevenly sliced into unattractive piles. Hot food was no more consistent: bland fried monkfish chunks preceded a succulent sliver of grilled cod. Meanwhile, the service headed straight down the chute. Moments after our host dropped $1000 on the meal, they kicked us out. It was 11pm and the waitress declared 'We're closing now, time for the staff to eat.' Showing us the door, the manager pathetically blamed 'company rules' for the ousting. Whatever the reason, none of us will be back. Now more than ever, team Yasuda should get a clue: fewer people will line up to splurge on authentically un-Japanese hospitality like that. No matter how good itÂ’s supposed to be.

I went to Sushi Yasuda with a friend for lunch. We enjoyed it so much! The sushi are amazingly delicious, melting in your mouth.. I was in awe at every bite! The decor, quite simple, creates a peaceful ambiance. The service isnt exceptional, but good, nothing to complain about. I highly recommend the bar, where you can see the artists carefully prepare the heavenly food. To conclude, I know this place is pricey (although thats a good value compared to other overpriced places), but if you go for lunch, you can have 2 main courses, 2 apetizers, 2 beers (yeah I know...) and not exceed the $100!!! I will definitely go back. I loved it.

I will never visit this restaurant again. I have been before and the food is definitely worth every penny, but today I called to see if i could get a reservation for lunch and they said that there are always tables for walk ins and that I should come right away. After i rushed over in 10 minutes, the host was extremely rude, telling me that there were no tables availalbe and that I was the one who misunderstood. Maybe there was a miscommunication, but after rushing over there to be told it was my fault, I just don't want it that bad. Honestly, there is good sushi all over NYC, and I will never go to Yasuda again. Try Inase on the UES for exceptionally fresh sushi and excellent service.

Definitely one of the best sushi restaurants in Manhattan by far. I'd say 15 East is it's only competitor. I used to like Kuruma, but honestly it's just too much of a rip-off. I think nay-sayers need to try sitting at the bar with Mr. Yasuda, as I would agree that the food at the table is not as good or imaginative, but with him it's fantastic. Specifically the sea eel and the cuttlefish are my favorites. Cheers, Boris

There is huge potential in New York's Sushi Scene

If Sushi Yasuda is among the best sushi restaurants in New York (ref: your review), then I'll have to say that there is a huge potential for a real sushi restaurant in NYC. The fish is of poor quality. The maki are amateurish. And most importantly: the taste is not good. Having tasted sushi in most corner's of the world, including Japan, I must say that I have rarely had a worse experience than this. Absolutely NOT RECOMMENDED

The food here is, to be fair, good. However, I've had some of my worse service experiences (and I've dined at alot of NYC top restaurants to say this objectively) at Yasuda. The maitre'd is rude and the restaurant somehow lost my reservation after several calls to them to confirm the day prior. To top it off, when I asked politely to try and understand the confusion, they had such poor attitude, not to mention noone there can speak proper English (especially the maitre'd).

Yasuda is mannered after the purist "Edo-mae" (means "just brought in from Tokyo bay") sushi establishments in Tokyo where there is usually no sign out front, very minimalist decor, where you can only get a seat via an introduction, and you really dont order anything, you just eat what the chef decided to buy from Tsukiji fish market that morning. These places use an archaic form of Japanese when ordering and the sushi is the best in the world (nothing in the states, including sushi at Yasuda, comes remotely close!). At Yasuda, you should go and just ask for whatever the chef recommends that day. If you are a true sushi connoisseur, you will love it and have just about the best sushi experience you can have in the states. If you cant eat this or that, or like ordering things like California rolls with spicy sauce, this is not your place. If you cant afford $150 per person, this is also not your place. But unless you visit Tokyo and have local friends that can take you to the real "Edo-mae" joints, youll not experience better sushi anywhere in the states.

You'll be fine if you speak Japanese, otherwise prepare to repeat every order at least three times to the server. The maitre'd was unfriendly at each visit. The appetizers are to be avoided, mostly fried and unappetizing. The sushi is very good and there is a better than average selection of fish, but the overall experience is not a good value. They act as if they're doing you a favor. For my money go to ISE on Pine Street downtown and eat at the sushi bar. Great selection and engaging sushi chefs.
