I went hoping to have a great meal and found poor food served as though it were a gourmet treasure. People who know good Indian food can't be fooled by this place. Would never go back and would never recommend it.

Truly one of the better dining experiences in NYC. You walk in to a beautiful dining and right away you realize your in for something amazing. Crab soup is among the better dishes I have ever eaten. Chicken Tikka Masala & the Lobster Masala were both astounding. Service was on point! Definately would recommend to anyone!

The best Indian restaurant in the whole tri-state area. The restaurant and the kitchen is spotless, the staff is very helpful and attentive, and the food is amazing. Very creative presentation and very tasty, unique indian food. Highly recommended. And...it is not expensive at all for the quality.

Tamarind is an all time favorite for special and memorable occasions - from farewells to birthdays. Mostly recently, we were delighted to find Uma dining there when we were celebrating a dear friend's birthday! As we savored the wonderful food, along with the rest of the room, we snuck discreet glances at the stunning presence who obligingly faced the room from one of the raised booths. And we fantasized about going up to her and voicing our support - "You show him, you amazing woman!!!" - but of course, like all New Yorkers we are way too cool to do that. Even ex-celebrity sightings, Tamarind consistently meets my high food standards. While the samosas are incredible, try the more unusual appetizers - like the flour patty filled with chickpees and tamarind sauce (Raj-Kachori). I love the well-seasoned and tender meats, whether its a tandoori or a curry. I particularly like the lamb vindaloo but have been told that the lamb shank is disappointing. Best of all there is a broad variety of delicious vegetarian entreesin addition to the vegetarian thali special (yummy). The bar is cool and as a regular, I have never had any service related complaints.

OVERRATED, OVERPRICED AND OVERCOOKED FOOD!

I rarely write reviews, but have just returned from Tamarind and felt compelled. I was so disappointed at the overcooked, overpriced food served. My husband and I felt screwed by the price of the meal compared with the quality. The service did not compensate for the food. We could not understand the waiter, and he was not attentive. The manager said he was appreciative of our feedback... but then went on to offer us more food to compensate!!! Please, as if the meal you served wasn't enough! He did at least make a point of visiting the kitchen and telling the chef. We won't be returning to Tamarind, and will not be recommending it to anyone. Avoid, unless you want to overpay for overcooked food!

We went for an anniversary dinner, expecting a wonderful time having read the reviews. However, our waiter did not tell us what the specials were, did not bother to ask if things were to our liking during the meal, and brought us our bill while we were in the middle of eating our dessert-- not asking if we wanted anything else. When we tipped him less because of the poor service, he had the nerve to come back to our table and "recommend" that the gratuity is normally 18%! He did not leave us alone until I told him that his service was rude and inattentive and that gratuities are normally at the customer's discretion based on service.

I hereby declare that Tamarind is horribly overrated for those who know their Indian. But, it's good for NY standards - indeed, it is rather trendy. Then again, would you really take a date to an Indian? ... you would? ... oh dear. GSTQ.

This restaurant is definitely Ian Schrager meets the Indian equivalent of Jean Georges...or somebody. The glassed-in kitchen makes you wonder how the cooks work in all that heat, but when you get your food, you're so overwhelmed you stop caring. Exquisite Indian cuisine without feeling overpowered by curry. Convenient location makes it even more attractive. Gotta see it to believe it.

Overcowded, overpriced, and surly wait-staff. With below average food to boot? It was simply horrible. There are just too many other choices in this town to have to eat at Tamarind. Seek them out and avoid the experience I had.
