The barstaff for whom every day is a bad day

I decided to give the Commodore another shot (lured back by the mojitos) after being put off by the terrible service I received the first time around. The selection of garage classics playing, delicious chicken burger and cocktails at this place are great. The portions here are generous and at a reasonable price. Cocktails are somewhat esoteric. The wince-worthy, try-hard nonchalance you get from the staff kept making me feel as if I'd done something wrong. I didn't enjoy being spoken to in such an 'accusing' tone when simply being asked where i was sitting. In all, the pitiable attitude of the staff, which makes one assume the worst about their personal lives and wages (esp. after all the zero dollar tips they must keep getting), leaves a nasty after taste that doesn't quite compensate for the excellent food.

Best in the hood

I live a couple blocks away. My friends are always calling me to have dinner there or just a few drinks. It never disappoints. The hot fish sammie is the best! I have to admit the biscuits are just as good as they are in the South. I can't wait for the warmer weather so we can sit on the patio!

the commodore is fantastic! it's like hanging out with your friends in your dad's basement (if he was a really cool sailor back in the day). the food is SO good and the adult cheese is mildly obscene. That sandwich is the sole reason i regret giving up dairy on a daily basis. seriously. LOVE IT!

the thighs and biscuits are the bee's knees but it's the burger that is pretty epic

I super duper love the food here. I can't get enough of the thighs and the biscuits with that apple (maple?) butter. The thighs are so juicy and tender and the skin is so crispy and light. I don't even like biscuits and I have to have at least 4 when I'm there...but recently I had the burger and I was blown away. It was perfect even the next 3 times I went. Go there for the burger or thighs and you won't be disappointed.

I hate giving this place a a bad rating because the food is amazing, but the surly bartender that seems to be there every single time I go is just too much to deal with. I can give the hipster doofus a bad day now and again, but this guy is ridiculous and seems to be rubbing off on the other bar tenders. it's a shame, but I think I'll wait until I go back to Texas to get my next round of biscuits rather than go back to The Commodore

worst service and drinks

If for some reason you had to go to this place... I hope you know the bartenders because otherwise they won't even acknowledge you. And only order drinks that come straight from the bottle, nothing mixed, otherwise you are going to get the worst idea of a cocktail imagined. If you are still around after dealing with the attitude and crappy drinks you must be high. Btw that's my theory as to why the place is open... drug front.

I love the food, laid-back atmosphere, and strong drinks here, but the dead-eyed female bartenders take forever to acknowledge their customers and are always checking their cell phones, even when the bar isn't all that busy. No matter how patiently, wordlessly, and smilingly I wait to order, they always give me an attitude when they finally get around to me. I always feel as though I've done something wrong to them, but I can't imagine what that thing might be. My friends assure me that they've gotten attitude at Commodore, too, and that it's nothing personal, but I still feel uncomfortable and hesitate to go in on some nights. The male bartenders are somewhat more easygoing; although they're more stonefaced than friendly, they don't act as though they're disgusted by my very existence if I'm standing at the bar. I'll go back for the burger, but only if I see some of the nicer staff working.

Tolerance required

The neighborhood may look odd when it's plastered in country plaid, but Southern folk and fans - like any other group occupying Brooklyn - clearly know how to have fun. The Commodore is a clean, if stylized, space with a cozy bar and courtyard, and when the DJ starts spinning, no one's too shy to dance. On the down side, the cocktail service is a mess and the sound system is reminiscent of the AM radio on a rusty old beater. The place hasn't been open long, so it may not be predictable or polished; but we had a good time there and it seems worth another go. Next time, I'll sit outside, try the food and enjoy a...Schlitz.
