We sat at the bar facing the cooks, it was fascinating to see our meal happening. The chef was at each station guiding cooks while managing several skillets at once. While the food was very rich, the small portions compensated; we did not leave hungry. Desserts well thought out and de-luxe. Our server was knowledgeable prompt, made certain we liked everything. He cared, you could tell. I did not find anything oversalted, but I often have that complaint at Spotted Pig. The oyster pan roast was killer - better than Grand Central. Go with an open mind..

I have eaten very happily at some of the London fish houses on which The John Dory is supposedly modeled, and I only wish there were something like that in New York: The John Dory isn't it. The much praised oyster pan-roast was cloyingly rich and so over-salted and generally over-seasoned that it was like being slugged repeatedly in the taste-buds. The chorizo-stuffed squid was similarly overly aggressive (and the squid was bouncy), and the aioli on the crab bruschetta was yet another salt-and-seasoning onslaught. I didn't finish anything (except my dessert of eton mess, which I loved). I'm a big fan of strong flavors, but in the absence of any contrast, I found the meal...the two words that come to mind are "vulgar" and "brutal," like a movie with no plot, no dialogue, just explosions and car-chases. Did love the dessert, though. And it was fun to watch the pretty fishies.
