This is my new favorite spot. Went there for dinner on a date one Friday night. The staff bent over backwards to make sure we were well taken care of. The food was outstanding... creative, simple and delicious. The atmosphere was tasteful and lively but not overbearing. You could call it light romantic. A good place to bring that special someone or your out of town guests who want to see what a great west village bistro feels like. I'll definitely go back.

Big Taste from and a Little Space

On a sundry winter Tuesday night, some former co-workers and I went to little owl for an early dinner. The wine list was well-selected, and the food was savory, well-set in such a cozy space. The sole was a bit salty for my taste, but was countered with the shrimp and lobster salad. The dessert (classic apple cobbler) came out flaky and warm, and perfectly spiced. It is, however, a very small space, and once the dinner crowd trickled in, things got a little too cozy.

Food Good, but Service with Major Attitude

Okay, the food is very good, but not spectacular (I've eaten at the Harrison, which is way over priced, and the Red Cat, which is not, where the chef worked before, and his work here is one step up). But the attitude of the staff is kind of appalling. I have my own business, which pivots on the service industry, and I'm still scratching my head about this place. After I was seated with my guest at a very tiny, cramped table, I was told, after we ordered drinks, that we would be required to "vacate our table at 8:15." It was 7:15 when I was told this bit of, ah, news. I asked "why?". "Because we have an 8:15 reservation for that table, and you were a walk in." Okay, this was a first. Someone essentially came over, after giving us a table, and turned on an egg timer and said -- go! My friend and I almost laughed, I almost walked out (I think of this happening say in Rome or Paris, where I eat a lot, and the police might be called). As it was, we had to be out in an hour anyway. But after the arrogant and preposterous attitude, the food and buzz of the place went down the tubes. I cannot recommend this place, and will not return.

Service trouble

During one of our regular visits to the city, we went to the Little Owl. The food was very good. The restaurant itself is tiny and uncomfortable. My wife and I were appalled at our waiter's attitude. His lack of respect for us was very evident and we both felt the bus staff did a better job than our waiter. Example: Our waiter "There are no specials this evening" 15 minutes later at the next table "Hi {knows names} Let me tell you about the Chef's specials this evening. Because we work in the hospitality industry and also because the bus persons need tips to survive we left a 15% gratuity. In spite of having very good food, we will NOT return to this restaurant and recommend to visitors to spend your money where you will be treated better.

For a year I was not able to get a table at this place (I did not try so hard admittedly)... Now the hype is over, but it should not be. The food is absolutely delicious from appetizer to desert. A place I would like to go back and back and back to try the entire menu!

For a recessional Wednesday, we were somewhat surprised to see that this pint-sized West Village neighborhood darling was totally packed. But then again, it's got all the makings for a perfect lunch: a light-filled corner space, cozy and casual, with the same, raved-about, seasonal fare for half of the dinnertime price. A tasty selection of wines by the glass came with (mostly) delicious food: crispy cornmeal-battered fried clam strips with tangy coriander aioli, cauliflower and sugar snaps topped with savoury, crunchy bread crumbs, and a well-dressed healthy sunflower salad with bibb and beets. BUT the insipid-looking goat's cheese gnocchi with rataouille and braised lamb bits was like eating nuggets of wallpaper paste swimming in a pool of chevre-flavoured slip. Let's hope it doesn't take them all spring long to sort out this dish on their seasonal menu.

EXPENSIVE. Good food, Great service, attentive, friendly Sixteen dollar foie gras app had four marble size pieces hardly enough! Duck salad was excellent, Lamb was tender and delicious, although also pricey for portion size. Have to go back and judge with less pre game at Employees Only!

Little Owl is the perfect little treasure in the West Village, a great date spot; it's little, cozy, dark and romantic. The food is top-notch-- everything was excellent from the appetizers to the entrees and even dessert (except I would have prefered if they'd offered the fish deboned!). The service was attentive and kind, and every little detail made the experience just right--- right down to the way they brought the check... in a real book (rather than the typical, cold black holder)... An excellent restaurant on every level, probably my best NYC dining experience to date... and completely worth the wait!
