having recently revisited the Mark for breakfast, I must amend my previous post by giving the Mark staff credit where credit is deserved. The service was astoundingly improved; the waitstaff was attentive and professional and clearly working on their service skills. This key improvement completely changed my dining experience (even my perception of the food)- give it a try because while it is certainly not perfect, the Mark is above average, perhaps on its way to excellent!

Atmosphere, a decent cup of coffee and comical service

While the breakfast menu is refined and chic, there are better places to enjoy your morning cup of coffee on Madison Avenue. The atmosphere certainly can't be beat, but the food is only mediocre and nothing to go out of your way for. It lacks the variety or originality of Eli Zabar's E.A.T. a few blocks away, as well as the refinement of the Carlyle across the street. The service is so bad it is almost comical but also perfect if you want to enjoy your morning joe slowly, without waiters rushing you through your meal or pushing you out the door in the midst of a hectic morning rush; the waiter at the Mark will surely forget your presence the moment you take your seat. With an abundant selection of newspapers available though, you can sit and read for hours (just don't expect to have your coffee cup refilled without asking, twice). This makes the Mark not a bad choice if atmosphere is what you are looking for. The food however leaves something to be desired. I recommend a simple bowl of yogurt, though feel free to add the housemade granola if you are looking for a good, but sugary, breakfast treat. Splurge on the berries if you will, but the fruit never measures up the freshness of what I get at the Bergdorf Goodman cafe, so I often pass. The selection of pastries also look good, though I can't say for sure. The juice is most certainly fresh squeezed, but then again, it is at Zabars and most places on the UES too.
