Great Southern Food, Lacking Southern Hospitality

Redhead has the best shrimp and grits I have had in the city. They also make wonderful cocktails. The only area they lack in is the service. The staff isn't very friendly. Even so, I have been there 3 times. The food makes up for the unwelcoming staff.

Though my husband and I arrived early for dinner we were invited to sit at the bar until time for serving. The bartender was pleasant and informative about the drink and dinner menus and very cordial as we chatted while he prepped the bar for service. We snacked on the bacon peanut brittle (yummy - we did bring a bag home) and nursed our drinks (I recommend the ginger snap). We loved, loved, LOVED the shrimp and grits (creamy and the sausage had just the right amount of bite.) My husband raved about how flavorful his burger was and I was pleasantly surprised with the portion for the buttermilk fried chicken which was delicious. The Redhead was a great dining experience to end our museum filled day in NY.

Read all the hoopla so we finally went over. Cozy little place. Went on a Saturday at 6PM. Most of the bar was open and a couple of tables available. Sat at the bar with a very friendly bartender. Excellent server. Decent beer choices as I had the Allagash White & Smutty Porter. On to the food. The "famous" Peanut Brittle with Bacon is good. Not brittle though as the nuts are loose with a bit of stickiness to them. With bits of bacon it's pretty tasty. We had the Pork Belly App which was very good. For $12 I wish the portion was bigger. Ok, the fried chicken. Yes, it was good but at $18 getting two medium size pieces of good fried chicken is way too pricey. More like a $12 dish. The side salad was very tasty. For dessert we tried the Fried Blueberry Pie, which was excellent, and the Chicory Coffee Shake, which was just good. All in all it was a nice dining experience but I certainly wouldn't rush back for their $18 Fried Chicken.

This place does the best Buttermilk Chicken! There's usually enough room to squeeze near to the bar whilst waiting for your table so don't let that put you off making a visit. The staff went out of their way to make sure we had a great time.

Best fried chicken I have ever had

Buttermilk fried chicken can only taste like this (with its perfect savory crust) if you have just the right sort of care and careful process as done at the Redhead. An absolute must. Don't sleep on the shrimp/grits/sausage bowl of perfect either. Or the short ribs. Or the salt and vinegar fingerling potatoes. Or a tall glass of red on a crisp NYC autumn evening. Just go. Like now.

I admit that the 1-2 hour wait is a bit much for most people, but this good southern food in NYC is well worth the wait. Both the bartenders and the staff were wonderful. The pretzel and beer cheese is a must!

Met friends for dinner at 7:30 on a Friday evening. Had a terrific cocktail, "The Revival," which involved Beefeater, Lillet and fresh citrus. Totally lived up to its name! Dinner was tasty. Crispy yet juicy fried chicken, salty and sweet bacon peanut brittle, unctuous beef short ribs over greens. Addictive homemade waffle chips and onion dip. It got full FAST, right after we got seated, so perhaps not good for big groups, and it got LOUD, so maybe not great for an intimate date--but if you've been together for a while, go for it. We waddled off full and happy, and would definitely return.

I arrived at the redhead and was impressed with the drink menu - they all looked interesting and delicious. I had high hopes when I sat down at the bar and ordered a drink. However, by the time my drink arrived, I didn't even want to stay and drink it. Don't get me wrong . . . the drink was absolutely delicious. However, the bartender was so grumpy and unfriendly. I will never return based on how unpleasant that man was. Also, not sure how this factors into it, but I am pretty sure that he was one of the owners.
