My previous review (Excellent but now too popular) is out-of-date. They now take reservations, but the prix-fixe tasting menu has risen from $50 to $100. (And you normally have to call well in advance.) The food ranges from very good to excellent, and some of the preparations are so complicated that the server should leave behind a printed sheet with his description. Few but the most accomplished chefs will remember it; but, to me, that's part of the fun. I think the $100 is money well-spent if you can afford it, but I got two surprises with the check, one nice and one nasty. A small box of sweets to take home, and a $44 charge for two glasses of cabernet. (They weren't even particularly generous pours.) Unfortunately, I think the boys are getting a bit greedy.
Shocked and Disappointed

i was really looking forward to my evening at Torrisi and was very disappointed. i spend a lot of time in Italy, and am accustomed to homemade pasta and fresh mozzarella: put simply, fresh and homemade italian food is my norm, & something i get I get in Italy, as well as many NYC restaurants. I did not get this at Torrisi. For example, their pasta is not homemade: for the $65 pre fix price, i found that to be very disappointing. Also, i had fluke as my secondi, and it wasn't very special: it was essentially a white piece of fish drenched in butter. Shockingly, it wasn't very tender, although the plentiful butter did taste good. Lastly, i was very disappointed to be told, immediately following my last bite of dessert, that we needed to leave, as they needed the table for the next seating. i was in no way lingering. i had just finished my dessert. For a meal that cost us $500.00, it just was not worth it. I will strongly discourage friends and family from dining at this establishment.

Torrisi - it's hot place to get a reservation and finally we got a spot for the Chef Tasting menu. We were really excited! The waiter explained that it's going to be 20 dishes tasting menu of small bites! OK...We were really hungry so we thought we can handle 20 dishes! The food started arriving after about 15 minutes. And it's really SMALL bites!!! They were really nice and creative presentations. Dishes came in about 5 to 10 min intervals. We ate everything! Nothing impressed us that much - it was a long boring night - and it was really PAINFUL to sit on that wooden bench for almost 3 hours! We just couldn't wait for the meal to be over so we could leave and get some FOOD! I have had many tasting menus in NYC - and I have always been satisfied and amused by it and happy - no matter how much it cost - but this dinner was just not happening! Overpriced and tremendously overrated! Of course, I will never forget the dinner - but I would not recommend to my friends to spend that much money on that tasting menu! So here is the verdict: I If you really want to taste the Chef's Tasting menu and see what all the hype is about...make sure eat before you go and bring a cushion for your ass - it will be a looong night and it's a really hard surface to sit for almost 3 hrs! And go with someone who can make you laugh about it and don't expect Italian specialties - it's American-Italian New York infusion tasting. Only "tasting"!!! NO EATING! Good luck!
Worth the Hype

Been there for lunch and dinner. It's not a place you're going to pop in with friends and get a table when it's convenient. It's a mission. Treat it that way. They do things their way -- no reservations and few people served each night. Luckily for them, they make such amazing food they can get away with it. The food is seriously, absolutely one of the best meals you will ever have. And for $50, it's a complete bargain. Just understand that it's dinner on their terms, not yours. Welcome that concept and you'll have a great time.

I went for an afternoon sandwich and went back later for the prix-fixe dinner. The wait staff was a bit too cheerful for me- but the food was fantastic. Worth every cent of the 50 buck!
Good eggplant parm, expensive, rude cashier

I have been meaning to try this place for a while, but they don't have a lot of vegetarian options. In the warm months, they do a pretty serious eggplant parm, and the hero is the only thing I've tried. The hero was $10.89 with tax. It was pretty busy when I got there, but no line out the door or anything like that. The guy who took my order was rude and unfriendly, which turned me off right off the bat. The whole soup Nazi thing might work on Seinfeld, but not here. A big tray of eggplant parm is sitting on the counter - it looks like a big lasagna. The preparation differs from the traditional breaded, fried eggplant slices baked with marinara and mozzarella. They slice the eggplant very thin, probably with a mandolin or deli slicer. The skin is left on, but the pieces are thin, so it's not too noticeable. The layer it a couple inches high, probably 5-8 pieces thick. They include some fresh basil and it seemed like fresh mozzarella. The bread for the hero is good, crusty italian bread with a bit of a char on the bottom. There were too many seeds in the eggplant that I got. Overall a very good eggplant parm sandwich, with high quality ingredients. I don't think I'll be back again for a long time, because it was $10.89 for a sandwich and I can get a very good panini and fresh pomme frites at Whole Foods for $7.29. But worth trying. If there was a "Maybe" option for would you go back, I'd pick that.
All About the Sandwiches

Brought my Italian father here and for the first time, he was impressed by an American Italian restaurant, as was I. We went for lunch, everyone getting a different sandwich and sharing. The flavors were rich and wonderful. From the basil-rich taste of the Chicken Parm Sandwich to the more zesty taste of the Turkey, everything was delicious, right down to the sides of roasted peppers we order to bathe our sandwiches. This is a place where it is all about the food, so don't expect a lot of frills. The staff was very pleasant and the decor was fun nonetheless.

Met some friends we hadn't seen in a while and were looking forward to a leisurely and delicious meal. Agreed to meet at 6:30 and were prepared to put our name on a list and go elsewhere for some drinks. Got there a little earlier and were told there was nothing until 9:15. but they took our name and cell # and said they'd call if it looked like we could get in earlier. Just a few minutes later they did in fact call and said if all of us could be there in 5 minutes they would seat us. Frantically called our friends who managed to be there in a few minutes. Turned out they told the same thing to another couple also waiting and it was a friendly but awkward showdown out front as to who's friends would show first. We "won". We sat down and the onslaught of food began. The meal was delicious but I have never felt so rushed in my life, even after asking them to slow it down a bit, one course coming every few minutes. The food was outrageously delicious but truthfully I could not enjoy it because of how rushed we were. At the end of the meal they gave us the check and asked us to pay because there were people waiting. We paid but had not finished our coffee or the last of the wine and we were again asked to leave, the consequence, they said, of them "fitting us in." Six courses in under an hour and a half, and a $300 bill for four. Shame on them.

They take no reservations. If you don't mind eating at 6, you could go and get right in. Now, you have to wait on line. They only have a few seats, but I thought I'd be OK. Then people kept meeting friends already on line, so I didn't make the cut. If you have a cellphone and don't mind wandering around the neighborhood for an hour-and-a-half or so, they'll call you when your table is about to be ready. Not for me. BTW, there is a place to sit outside for only the first four people on line. If you get inside, the service is pleasant; but since I didn't, it's a one for their ridiculous policy. If I could have given it a zero, I would have.
Lunch = mediocre food, terrible service

Just got a RARE turkey hero from Torrisi - I do not think Turkey is supposed to be rare, is it? Not when served by my Italian relatives, that's for sure. And the service was ABOMINIBLE, from the get-go. There was casual rudeness, and everything took so long despite their being almost 10 guys behind the counter. The place was overflowing with folks waiting for takeout, for what seemed like hours. The worst part? My order was also to go, and they threw the containers of antipasti in the bag without putting the lids on! And got even more attitudinal when I showed them how everything was leaking before I got out the door! Since I went there to treat myself after a crap day, and now feel like I've been totally jacked, I really feel the need to vent! Thanks, guys! At least I will no longer dream of the turkey hero I read about - so not up to its rep. Now I will go take my turkey out of the oven. I had to cook it some more, because rare turkey? Just not my thing - blecch! Lotsa hot peppers though, if you like that...for me that's just a flavor-cover...
