I love and have been visiting Tout Va Bien for many years. I don't go for the food; it's been fine, but not stellar. I just love this restaurant for all kinds of reasons. After not visiting for maybe a year, I did the the other night, and wow, the food was really quite good. I don't know if this was a deliberate shift, an improvement that just crept in, or maybe just a very good night? I'll go back soon.

The experience was fantastic. This cozy restaurant has an outstanding customers service. They really know how to make feel welcome. The food is surprisingly good for the pricing. I've been in $$$$$ restaurants and sometimes the have fall short to deliver what is expected. Next time I'm in NYC I'm coming back to this place. I simple loved it!!!

Definitely a Bistro

This has come to be one of my favorite restaurants in New York. It has the right mix of casual feel and good food. It's definitely not the finest dining in the city, but it's a great place to go to relax after work. It's a casual place where there's a good chance of a crowd watching a soccer match. The service can be a little slow, but is very friendly - the staff remember you when you come back, and there's a free drink at the end of the evening as often as not. I've not had any of the food issues that some of the other commenters have noticed - my food has always been well prepared and well presented. I always get the onion soup (a weakness of mine) and have had excellent Coq au Vin, Canard l'Orange and a good filet. I've also had several very good cocktails. One issue is that the wine list is rather small and non-specific. They usually have very good wines to go with their food, but you kind of have to trust them on the particular vintage (the list usually just has a region or style and a price). They will, of course, show you the bottle before opening it so that you know exactly what you're getting, but you can't really pick out a perfect bottle in advance.

They lost my credit card!

My wife and I and another couple had dinner at Tout Va Bien on Dec. 29. It was an enjoyable meal. The atmosphere was festive. However, the waiter lost my credit card between the table and the cash register! I understand that accidents happen and it was a busy night. However, they never found the card, did not make an effort to follow up with us (we had to call them), and never offered to compensate us in any way for the significant inconvenience of having to cancel our card. In fact, they did nothing during the whole process to show any recognition that we were put out by this. I consider that very poor customer service.

comme ci comme ca

The food is fine not great. I went here because I grew up around the corner yet had never been. The space is smaller than I expected but the wait staff and my party managed to get around. Many diners ordered mussels as an appetizer (though we didn't), so I may try that if I go back. Tout Va Bien is a quaint bistro, moreof a neighborhood place if you're french (which I am), then somewhere I would plan to dine at. Or, at best, somewhere to pop in before a show. The wine was excellent and they gave us glasses of champagne along with the check (so I gave the service an extra notch).

enjoyable evenings

For the price some of their dishes could be cooked to a slightly more 'high end' standard... but this is french bistro food - they are not trying to be Jean-Georges - and they produce excellent french bistro food. The Coq-au-vin had a great flavor and crispiness, the french fries are great and the steak has a very good flavor as well. Service can be a little laissez-faire, but everyone is super friendly. I think service derives less from indifference and more from the relaxed atmosphere they create, but that's a matter of perspective.... Either way, great bistro atmosphere, solid bistro food, and always a good time. Great for groups. The tables get a little tight when it's crowded, however they will treat your group well and ply you with food/alcohol.

Longevity does not equal edibility

This restaurant may be a Theater District relic and an old favorite for some, but it should be noted, as a warning, that the food here is really below par for New York City and is in no way worth the money. For $52 dollars I shared Chateaubriand for two with a friend. It was a struggle to cut through the meat because it was of such poor quality. I tasted another friend's steak a poivre, which was also surprisingly bad and was $27. Further, I think no maintenance, besides the unavoidable patch-up, has been done on the space, perhaps since it opened 57 years ago-- there is an intense moldy smell which I think could be a health violation. Although diners seemed to be enjoying themselves, I am sure it could not be for the food. (There is a sort of Sweeny Todd feeling in the air, as in who knows what is going on behind the scenes.)
