A Midtown sushi spot offers something above the rest

I truly enjoyed my experience at this midtown sushi hideaway. It's a welcoming, comforting destination for Japanese nationals visiting from afar as well as well-heeled local crowd; all find the opportunity to sidle up to the sushi bar or one of the comfortable tables and down several bottles of sake or brown rice liquor, all reasonably priced. Both the dinner special deal - a choice between sushi, sashimi and a protein as well as a roll, plus tempura, rice, salad and soup, all for $28 - and the entrees in general represent a gentle touch from the chefs in the kitchen as well as the sushi chefs.

I went to Tsushima for my fiance's surprise birthday party, where we met 10 Korean friends. Tsushima worked with me to create the surprise, served an excellent 7 course meal, allowed us to bring our own cake, and waited on us very attentively. The sushi and sashimi were fresh, and everything they served was excellent. My fiance especially loves the udon. When we left, everyone at the restaurant was friendly and thanked us for coming. I highly recommend Tsushima for dinners and small parties.

A friend of mine had a great experience here, so I was excited to try it. Alas, The service was slow. Lighting harsh. Sushi and sashimi so-so. 'Kitchen food' was good, but not mind-blowing. Waitress knocked over my drink, did not replace it. All in all, not nearly as good as I had hoped for. I hope they can improve.
