Wonderful menu and lively, relaxed setting

The menu is a wonderful mix of sophisticated comfort food, classic seafood offerings, and interesting specials. We really enjoyed the escargot appetizer, lobster risotto, and roasted cod. The atmosphere is really lively and the staff enhances the festive environment. It is a bit noisy at times, although that's probably because every table was filled. I'm convinced that I had a lot more fun than I might have without the excitement of all the other folks around us!

Stopped in for a quick dinner over the wet weekend and I must say I was very pleased. Happy to take advantage of the pre-theater $28 menu that included the well written about fish and chips. Very good, I didn't have the fries, but my date said they were sinful. Instead, I sampled the rack of lamb, tender and delicious. I will definitely return, for brunch perhaps...
Nice First Date...plus Celebs!

I went here last night on a first date. Was warmly greeted by the front desk, and seated almost immediately. While there were one or two options for under $20, I was a little surprised to see that most of the entrees were pushing $30 or more. However the gnocci I had was delicious, and my date enjoyed her meal as well. As a bonus, we sat right next to Richard Belzer from Law and Order, and Brian Cox from The Bourne Identity. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a nice restaurant that falls between formal and casual.
West Branch wonder

Observed packed restaurant, decided to try, warm welcome, nice decor. Food well prepared and presented with good selection and variety. Good wine list. Will visit again.......................
Re-visit that 'critc's pick'

Just had dinner there-- five people, five different entrees, not one worth writing about, at least not anything positive. Middling quality meat/fish, bland, under-seasoned food, undercooked pasta (and I enjoy mine al dente). Waitress failed to bring enough menus, then when we requested them, gave us two extra wine lists instead. She replaced them when we pointed it out, of course, but several little, annoying things like that. It all adds up to an indifferent dinner. Sadly reminded me of what we had to settle for on the upper west side for so many years, until places like Ouest opened. For that matter, a meal like this makes me wonder how far Valenti may have let Ouest fall.

This restaurant has a real problem! It's called attitude at the door. I made a reservation for 9:45 and when I arrived ON TIME the maitre d' barked at me that I had exactly 5 minutes before the kitchen closed. I refuse to be treated like I was in a diner especially when I'm about to drop $150+. If they were so concerned about the kitchen, they shouldn't allow reservations past 9:30PM. I don't think I'll be going back any time soon!
Wretched, even for the UWS

Terrible. The caesar salad was abominable: limp, aging brown chunks of romaine heart drowned in bottled-tasting dressing, three or four minuscule out-of-the-box croutons, and not a single anchovy. Unbelievable, and nine bucks! Any Korean deli does better. The whole trout was overdone, thus dried out. Burger was $19 (!!!) and overcooked -- and Shake Shack is a block away! Service was lazy and hostile; when I asked for anchovies, the waitress said "really? are you sure?" Yes. I'm sure. Really a disgusting meal and unpleasant experience. AVOID.

As a fellow industry professional and someone who really likes Ouest, I was so pleased that West Branch lived up to my expectations. The service was great, my companion and I enjoyed house baked bread and a unique Australian wine to start. My squash tortellini with ricotta and cinnamon beignet were both outstanding. I'll be going back for steak tartare and blanquette de veau soon!
