If you're familiar with the Spotted Pig the menu is no surprise. We decided to forgo a main and worked our way through a spectacular beef tartare, a lightly grilled tongue salad, a really crunchy radish salad, the not-to-be missed "cube" of micro-planed and deep fried potatoes, crunchy spinach with a light, really tasty vinegrette, and a couple of glasses of a Languedoc ... the waitress was wonderful, chatty, knowledgeable, as was the host, talked about April's farm in Cornwell .... the pork shank sounded luscious ... for another time. The butcher shop offers my favorite cuts: flatiron and tri-tip ... and they'll make anything to order .... neighborhood butcher ships are long gone ... welcome back ....

Shockingly Bad

Went early on a Sunday night. Service was terrible. I waited an exceptionally long time for someone to take my order. Then, a minute after someone took it, someone else came by to take it. When food was served, no one stopped by to ask if all was fine. Finished plates sat on the table, uncleared. I asked the waitress to explain the chicken and rice small plate. She pretty much said "it's chicken and rice." Um, OK. Thanks. The food was bad. Nearly inedible. The rice dish was filled with cilantro (which was not mentioned when I asked prior to ordering what was in the dish.) The potatoes are blocks of crisped grease. If they were salted, they would have et least been salty and greasy, which can be good, but instead, they just tasted gross. The steak was so marbled with gristle it was nearly inedible. Moreover, the steak was "cooked" to such minimal degree that it was essentially raw which, combined with the gristle, made the steak pretty bad. Oddly, the steak had a nice char. But still, it was little more than lipstick on a pig. Or a cow (do cows have lips?). In sum, White Gold is a physically uncomfortable space with poor service and awful food. If you feel like spending $75 per person (no drinks or dessert) for such a restaurant, go ahead. But if you don't, go elsewhere.

Unfortunately the horrific level of service more than offsets the great food.
