Oh Taisho! Oh Brother!

This had been one of my favorite restaurants until last night. The main thing I'm complaining about was the service. The person that showed me to my table could not have been more rude. He directed or should I say DEMANDED that my wife and I sit at a table that is in the corner in the back jammed by the table to the right and left of me I was hidden from view and had the least amount of space from all the tables. What was most aggravating was the there were FOUR empty tables when I arrived and he refused to seat me at any of them because he said he needed them for larger parties. Within minutes of being seating at the terrible table, he seated parties of TWO, over and over again to each and every table. Why? Because my crappy table was now occupied so he had no choice them there. Secondly, of the 6 items I order, I had to ask for 3 of them again. My food was served completely out of any logical order. Finally, the owner was there and when I complained about my seating and his attitude, she backed her employee and said that they need to keep the tables open for larger parties and I just had some bad luck. So make sure you're having a "lucky" day if you're going to eat here. Despite it having been one of my favorite restaurants-I won't be going there and I suggest that you go to one of the many other very good Japanese restaurants on this street that are just as good. I actually prefer cramped up places because it gives you a "authentic japanese restaurant" type of feeling. When i was eating in taisho, it felt like as if i was in tokyo, japan. The prices are decent- they're in manhattan after all. The food were delicious. I would definitely go back for more.

This place is unabashedly what it is: a grungy, crowded, no-frills kind of joint, and I love it!! I go there with friends to sit for hours ordering two dishes at a time, or sometimes by myself when I'm in the neighborhood and have an hour and an appetite to fill. The food is simple, but almost always delicious. The service can be a little harried, especially when it's crowded but for me that's part of the charm. I love ordering my staples (including smelt and quail egg yakitori, and fish roe filled grilled rice balls) and always trying at least one thing new (like fried skate wing or the eel and tofu dish). Go early before the line forms and bring an positive attitude and a sense of adventure. Also, you can have a full and tasty meal at a very reasonable price range.

Always crowded - not worth the wait for such low quality food. Had to sit in the back room that had barely any space at all, felt like I was crammed in a sardine can!! Service is absolutely atrocious, waitress got my order wrong and then argued with me about it! Food was incredibly mediocre ... I have had much better at other restaurants on St. Marks, at the the same or better prices.

This restaurant is terrible--do not eat here! It is absolutely disgusting. We had to send our plates back twice because they weren't clean. Then I actually saw a mouse! I looked at the health department write up and they are just on the edge of failing for health violations. In the end, and not very surprising, I got sick after eating here. Trust me, stay away from this horror-show of a place.

i eat here 2-3 times a week cuz its terrific traditional japanese bbq, cheap and affordable and the beers are large and in charge. i avoid it on weekends cuz its difficult to get a table for 3 or more people. did i mention SUPER CHEAP ?! ALSO PLEASE DON'T TAKE KIDS THERE - i will personally cut up your baby stroller. place is tiny and crowded.
