Matt Gross's review may be based on an Americanized sushi experience -- Yama is a traditional spot, where the fish is the focal point and simplicity is key. It's true that they may not have a crazy list of extravagant rolls with outlandish names, nor push the limit on creativity like SushiSamba ($$$$$$), they do have the best fish and fair prices. But, I suppose if you're looking for a sushi restaurant that isn't about the fish then it's not the place for you...you should probably just hit the Shake Shack in Madison Park.

Great Sushi in Union Square

Sushi Choshi was my go-to Gramercy/Union Square sushi restaurant for a long time. Little did I know a mere few blocks south was some of the best sushi I'd ever had -- at Yama. Their hand rolls are exceptional, and their home made spicy mayo is incredible. Granted, the deviation between their restaurants is very high (I've been to the Carmine St. location, which is nothing worth writing about), the 17th street location has some incredible fish. I wouldn't trust Matt Gross's advice -- and I'd appreciate if he'd give some other options for superior sushi if he truly feels that it exists near Yama. Definitely give this place a try and see for yourself.
