We really had a bad experience at Zinkichi. We had heard good things from friends, and we are very into food, so we were excited to go. We paid 200 dollars for a meal that was totally unacceptable for even 50. The food was not cooked properly, the portions were two bites each, and the flavors were not good together. Maybe we were there on a bad night- I hope so for their sake- But we really did not like it. I have never written one of these reviews before but it was so bad I thought I should warn. We did like our server though- he was very pleasant. Also the dining room was interesting, with curtains around each booth, and a doorbell to get the attention of the server. The food however was poor at best. (Our favorite restaurants right now are Momofuku Saam, Franny's, Motorino, Sushi Yasuda, Gramercy Tavern, and Lot 2- just so you know the type of food we do like)

Small portions, chicken was half cooked, fish innards swim in unrecognizable sauce, ughÂ…and a claustrophobic felling over all (booths are separated by curtains). We spent 3 hours there, and left hungry. Stopped to get some takeout on our way back. Overpriced too.

I had dinner at this restaurant at night so this location is adorably hidden. Once you go in...you've been transformed from the US to Japan in an instant. The bamboo and running water is ever so comforting. The set up is absolutely delectable! We sat in an l-shaped table that was privately shielded with a bamboo drape. Word to the wise...order the Omakase for 2 accompanied by Sake! You will not regret it. All in all...I will be back

Brilliant decor, brilliant food, amazing service. Things to sample: the Kumamoto oysters, the Pork Kikumi (spelling), the Grapefruit Gelee paired with Frozen Black Sesame Mousse. But do not rely on recommendations, just go with the chef's Omakase. You will not be disappointed, in fact you will ponder making reservations for the next day. For the best range of cuisine at the best price, try the Omakase. The dishes provided changes per number of guests, it gets better with bigger parties (ie. party of 5/6 gets a large selection of items versus a party of 2). Very paperback novel experience. I could not give Zenkichi enough accolades. For serious foodies only! A++

A guy I liked was coming to visit from out of town and told me to pick a great place for dinner. I was searching through descriptions when I found this place. It's japanese, but not sushi and each booth has a bamboo curtain and little buzzer to call the waiter. From the outside it's just an orange light, and inside, really dark and mysterious. The layout is a total labyrinth and they offer a chef's tasting menu for two so I didn't have to worry about deciphering the menu. The meal was such an adventure. Everything looked beautiful and tasted even better. Two dishes were probably the best things I've ever tasted. It wasn't too expensive and was the most romantic, exciting place I've ever eaten. Buzzing for service is so much fun, and with the stone walk ways and the private curtain it's like another world. After, we walked down to the waterfront where you have the most amazing view of the skyline. Perfect date.
