You might be thinking what makes this place so special, where could you go wrong with a doughnut? Well to you I say make a trip to the Lower East Side and see for yourself. The place gets crowded, but I went on a Sunday morning with a friend and we only waited in line for about 10 minutes. We got a variety of cake and yeast doughnuts to share including Creme Brulee, a must, the Blackout, Carrot Cake and a Rasberry Jam filled Peanut butter glazed doughnut reminiscent of course of a PB&J sandwich. All of the doughnuts were deliciously sweet, but not too heavy so you'll literally want to try every flavor. Plus, although we didn't indulge in them, they have HUGE cinnamon buns that I'm sure are divine. Definitely worth the trip!

IT IS WORTH IT to go back for the cake-type doughnuts. Let me explain. There are 2 main types, the yeast-type and the cake-type. It is also worth mentioning that all their doughnuts are transfat free, egg free, preservative free with no artificial flavourings. their glazes and jams are made with fresh fruit and roasted nuts. The yeast-type doughnuts are so-so to me. They are glazed and can be filled with jam freshly made by the Doughnut Plant. On the other hand, the cake-type is really good, especially Blackout if you are a chocolate lover... It is rich, moist, cookie-crumbly, and seem to have some liquid chocolate in it too. A few days after eating it, you will still be thinking about it. My experience at the shop and the serving guy is not spectacular however. They serve a good donut and worth a visit. However, I think this place is a bit over-hyped.

I've been eating Krispy Kremes for nearly 30 years, and the Doughtnut Plant takes it to a whole new level. Love their glazes -- vanilla and raspberry are unlike anywhere else -- and the creme-filled donuts are much richer than competitors' (although the coconut creme can be a bit overwhelming). The recent addition of cake donuts is great when a glazed is too much.
