maybe because they don's spend money advertising in NYMAG. far more authentic than tanoreen, owners are always there and they pride themselves on seeing how people are the second they step foot in the store. worth a drive from NYC. I usually only buy the prepared foods. the homemade yogust is amazing

Don't just go up to the counter and order your stuff without asking what's good that day. Not that everything isn't good--it is--but Sam wants an opportunity to give you little tastes of whatever he's most proud of, and they will be delicious! To brusquely order without further inquiry may get you a disappointed glance from Sam. But bear in mind that if you demur on his recommendation you may hurt his feelings too. He'll get over it--in a few months or so--but persist. He and the rest of the staff at the Family Store have hearts of gold. Also, he'll be straight with you if something is not up to par. In my opinion the best items are ones where he's able to stretch his imagination a bit--Middle Eastern staples are very good, but when he gets creative you'll be blown away. I've particularly loved: a baked lamb dish w/ potatoes & tomatoes, wild rice salad w/ dried cranberries, orzo salad, grilled chicken, sauteed chicory, semolina cheesecake... Prices are pretty high but utterly worth it as the other reviewer said. Personally I can't afford it at the moment and only go in once in a while for an ingredient or to say hi. Sam still greets me every time we meet on the street--he's the best kind of example of a classic NYC business owner. Just remember, he is passionate, maybe a little touchy, about his food, but if he weren't it wouldn't be so damn good!

For over 21 years, my mother has always enjoyed their dizzying variety of nuts for cooking and baking. The food is to die for! Sam does not lie: his are the best crab cakes in New York (rivaled only by his shrimp cakes). The hummus is light and refreshing. Walking into the store and simply inhaling is a thrill ride for the senses. In our experience, the service has always been friendly and without fault. Their desserts are delicious without saccharine gooiness. The salads are fresh and seasoned to absolute perfection. The meats are of prime cuts and succulent. There is variety in pricing as well, so there is something for everybody. But even for the pricier items on their menu, it is so incredibly worth it, you will gladly part with your hard-earned cash! While they retain their Middle Eastern roots and offer the staples in that cuisine, Sam has expanded the menu too. His deep fried turkey on Thanksgiving was so juicy and flavorful I seriously considered erecting a shrine to the man.
